Angora Rabbits

Portland, OR(Zone 8a)

I am in need of help with my angora rabbits. I have been quite negligent in grooming, as my rabbits are not fond of being picked up, and I don't like to cause them distress. However, the lack of grooming has started to cause problems (mats, mats, and more mats), so I decided to ignore the distress of holding and tried to do some grooming. I snipped into one mat, and managed to cut the poor rabbit's skin on her leg. Needless to say, she will be going to the vet first thing in the AM.

But I would really appreciate some advice on grooming angoras. This is supposed to be a "relaxing" time for both me and the rabbit, according to one web site that I read, but it has never been anything but distressing for all of us. I'm afraid of hurting the bunnies (that fear was realized today). On the one hand, rabbits supposedly do not like to be picked up. This seems to be true of my rabbits. But grooming must be done, or they can become unsanitary, and there is less usable fiber. Do you use two people to groom? How is the best way to capture and restrain the rabbit for grooming? Is there any way to make this more enjoyable for the poor rabbit? Any advice would be most welcome.
