I might buy it as a mutation of "Akasuki Umi Sea" but in my opionion it is not the true varitety. I to am guilty of calling something by a name when I know it is truly a mutation of that variety and in light of this entry I will be more careful in the future. One of my aims in growing these beautiful flowers was to make sure we have the name right and if they should be found wrong to change it. I would hope we would all hold ourselves to the highest ethics possiable, and take no short cuts.

I would agree with you normally, but this was ONE vine, and this one was on the vine along with all the so called normal ones, how would I document that do you think, as they grew on one darn vine? any suggestions - I am open :) LOL

its beautiful by any name

Well then if it was a vine by itself I would have thought it was not Umi "sea" in the first place, but that someone had made a mistake. This is not something that would be uncomman, mistakes are made. If it was Red would you still have called it Umi Sea, Laurrie? I know you have grown lots of Morning Glories and Know what Akasuki Umi "Sea" looks like.......
I will not continue this debate with you any longer as I intend to let others handle it and decide how to handle this in the future....
Here is a photo of my Akasuki Umi "Sea", and I have another one too.

I think the problem comes in when you sell the seed to joe public and claim that "Sea" is streaked and flaked - in which it is not. So this leads one to believe that your vine is not pure - and not just a few "fluke" blooms either.....JMHO.

Do you remember the description you gave for this variety (c&p from here as well as a famous selling site)?......

""AKATSUKI UMI SEA" Gorgeous 6 inch blooms of a deep blue purple with flecks and streaks thru it, white throat with just a hint of pink around throat."

See how misleading this can be for those who don't know that this variety is not streaked or flaked? If it is then it is not this cultivar.

Before we post an entry into the PDB it is our responsibility (as posters) to at least research what we are submitting to ensure correctness with the ID. I really don't care what goes on elsewhere but I for one would like the PDB remain accurate as possible...many of us rely on it......JMHO(A).

I don't think there is really anything here to debate, If you want it removed from the database, request that they remove it, I do have the original seed packet that was shared with me from Sbarr's co-op (2002) that the seed came out of, it is clearly marked what I reported it to be, now its possible it came that way from Japan or there was a mistake made somewhere after it got here before it was sent to me, I cannot say that because I just grew it and marked it then waited to see the blooms. I got these seeds in early 2003, and just planted them this spring. There are lots of other photos I took as well, the one pictured up above is just one that was "mutant" looking. But you do raise a good point!!

**editing to add: I did go in and "edit" the description that I put with the photo, so others will see it is clearly a mutant, or something was wrong when it was opening, etc.
