I recently saw a brugmansia in Victoria Educational Garden and fell in love with it. But I don't see them often in our hot, humid South Texas. Are there some that do better in our conditions? Or are they too difficult for our area?

Which Brugs in South Texas?
Where is Susie when you need her? LOL! She lives in S. Texas and I'm sure she can give you an idea of what works best. She does have company this weekend, but you never know, she might pop in to chat anyway.
I looked at the post title and giggled
Which Brugs in South Texas?
ANY ONE YOU WANT!!!!
Year round......
must be nice
Just no Sangs........
LOL I did the same thing CC... lucky you barbur!
Creamsickle, KBS, Georgia Peach, Rosamond, Golden Lady, Eternity, Harlot.........these have done best for me. They've bloomed in the heat and don't seem to mind the high pH of the soil nor the wind.
I'll add a few to that: Isabella, Frosty Pink, Dr. Seuss, Pink Floyd, Insignis Coral, Versicolor Alba, Milk 'N Honey. All of those have done well in the San Antonio area for me. They have been through a couple of "floods", where they lived in standing water for several days each time, drought, severe wind, and temps in the low 100's. I also have some that haven't done well in this weather.... Hope this is helpful to you.
I forgot Charles and Jessie Noel too. Jessie seems to love the heat. Of course lots more might have done well if the gator hadn't gotten in my way to water them! A new one is down there now, Lisa and Frannie got to see it. This one isn't as bold as the last one, so hopefully he will move on down the river!
Susie, are you sure you want to live there? I'd be having someone put up a good strong fence so one of those critters didn't get into the yard. You know, the kind where the wire is burried down in the ground about a foot or so. Gives me the willies thinking of you running into him when out watering.
WOW!!! I've never seen this one - Charley Boy is special!!!!
Sherry, I think that is Charles Grimaldi. The color is different on my monitor, but I don't know of any named Charley Boy.
Ooooops, Shirley, I think I must have intruded on a private joke, LOL!! Since my hubby's father, my hubby, my son and my grandson are named Charles, I was tickled there is or was a 'Charley Boy', which is what my hubby calls our grandson....
Sherry, you better get the pollen out and a paint brush and get some seed pods going so you can name one of your very own..........Charley Boy.
That's so funny, Shirley, my daddy said the same thing!! Great minds, ya know??!!
LOL!
And yall don't forget about, Cypress Garden, Ing Pink, Butterfly,Versi Peach,Shredded White, Ollie, Pink Beauty and I am waiting on my HG to get big enough to bloom I am sure if it is one that likes the heat it should bloom to high heaven here... I am sure I am forgetting about a few more and somemore of you southerners will chim in and let us know what you are growin......... :)
Dee
LOL See!!! What ones dont do good there? Yall are so lucky!
I can add Jean Pasco and Isabella, Ecuador Pink, Milk & Honey, Peaches and Cream, Dr Suess to the named varieties and I have three different
"un-named oldies" that certainly love it here...
The hardest part of growing brugs here- besides where to put all of them,
is how to keep the dat-darn Texas size bugs off of them.lol
MsC
OK, all you Bruggies...while you're at it, please name some (if there are some) that would do well in West Texas. It is hot-hot and dry here. Temps often over 100 in summer. One nice thing about dry, however, is there is not so much bug problem as some of you have. I won't mind keeping them wet.
The ideal for me would be one that blooms constantly--I have heard there are such--and one that would like to be in a container and grow in partial shade. Bright color would be a plus, but I like the whites, too.
I have never seen a Brug here. There might be a reason.

I like this thread and figure that whatever will grow in the hot areas of Texas will grow here too and I see several that I don't have, Peaches & Cream, Milk and Honey, Cypress Garden, Ing Pink & Ollie. I've never even seen Ollie. I will surely add these to my list...
I'll second Dr. Seuss and add Pink Favorite. Pink Favorite has performed incredibly, and last year DS was full of blooms nearly all summer. Both have blooms that do well in our heat (wilt in daytimes, but perk up at night).
Pennzer, I've been to Midland Texas! We were on our way to El Paso and then on to Phoenix.
Carter, my Dr. Seuss is wonderful, he came blooming (next day), and he's been blooming ever since and that's been over 3 months ago. Pink Favorite is really nice too, hasn't bloomed yet but she was very small when she arrived and I've dug her up and moved her twice (whew, poor baby) - she is really giving my other pink girls a run for the money...
Sherry, your climate is very similar to ours. Glad your DS is doing well. It is on my list of faves. Did y'all see the pic on another thread of poorgeorge napping under his DS? What a Kodak moment.
Dee, I really like Cypress Garden. It's top of my list. Think it could stand the aridity here? I can give it some shade and keep it wet.

Oh and another I forgot to mention that is almost non stop is Tequila Sunrise. I don't know how I forgot that one, it is in the front yard and is a show stopper.......This is one that is in the back yard and I will have to get a shot of the one in the front when I have a little more time. This is one that is well worth the time to grow...
:o)

Nice picture. Yellow is such a cheerful color.
I don't have any brugmansia but after reading this thread I think I will plant some
(next spring). Thanks, George aka Jester.
Thanks for all the suggestions, I've been gone for the week and was pleasantly surprised to find so many. I've not seen many growing around here. I assume the best time to plant is in the spring?
