palm paradise

Acton, CA(Zone 8b)

I visited this garden in Hawaii recently where the owner trucked in several feet of black lava rock and planted ONLY Palms (no other species) totalling about 400 species and over 1000 individuals. Great garden to photograph palms in (no tricky jungle shots or having to figure out how to show the palm through all the other plants covering it up). 8 acres of nothing but tropical palms.. wow!

Awesome pictures. Can you just imagine having no grass to cut or weeds to pull. I love that look. The palms are gorgeous. Not something native to Iowa, that's for sure. Wish they were.

Oh Bob! You must have been in hog-heaven in this place (I know I would have been!) -- So glad you got to see this!

Those royal palms are really beauties, aren't they? I wonder how those on the main thoroughfare through Fort Myers fared in the recent hurricane.

Oviedo, FL(Zone 9b)

What a great garden! They have to clip the coconuts of the coco palms so they don't knock out pedestrians along the streets in Hawaii. great photos!

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

OH...please tell me where this garden is....and how many hired to keep the weeds down (or how much weedcloth under the cinder!!!). I would love to go there.

WOW, WOW, WOW.

No weeds for two reasons... one is weeds have a difficult time growing in 4' of pure lava rock (palm holes were ammended so palms could survive- so only there can weeds really take hold if allowed), and the owner does weed patrol weekly (weeds pull out easily since nothing holding their roots in... actually, palms are easy to move for the same reason- just need a back hoe). Acres of lava beds like this with no undergrowth also have completely eliminated the mosquitoe problem many Hawaiians with dense, bushy gardens have (especially those with bromeliads, which is where mosquitoes love to breed). Nice.

Hmmmmm. There has to be something else. We found a whole pile of pure black cinder on our property covered with weeds...you are right tho', they come out faster.

Where is the Garden? Don't worry...I will be nice if I go over there! :o}

This is a private garden on the big island in Kapoho... don't know any more location than that
