Hi, 12 years ago I gave away my Epiphyllum oxypetallum when I moved to Germany from the U.S. I've since lived in Canada and now live in Israel. I haven't been successful in finding another oxypetallum since I gave mine away. My garden center doesn't think there are any in Israel, so I'm wondering how one goes about doing a trade internationally for a cutting. Will it rot in the post? Is it illegal? And most importantly, is anyone out there willing to do a trade with me for a precious cutting off their oxypetallum? I'd just about trade my first born for it LOL Thanks in advance.
-Julie
New to this forum. Need help getting Epi oxypetalum....
Julie, I'm certainly willing to send one to you for postage. Have to look into legalities, though. Package would have to be by air so the cutting doesn't die en route.
Maybe someone here will know about whether we can do it or not.
There is also an International Trading Forum here. You might want to post there as well. Those folks may know, and one of them may have an epi as well.
Wow! Thanks so much Darius! I'll check about the customs issues and get back to you as soon as I know what needs to be done....and if it's even permitted. But before I do that, I just want to say thank you so much for offering! :-)

I've sent cuttings to Israel before. No roots, no soil, and for heavens sake delare the cutting, send only one. Wash off with soap and water, and spray with a hort. oil spray, like neem or ultra fine. and state that you did so when they open the box they will see the note. I don't think it is on the endangered list, but it is a cactus. I don't own this species, however I think I can find one for you, and I'm willing to send it. Play innocent, if you are a new collector how would you know the rules. Just send it and delare what is in the package. Put Hobby supplies,1 plant leaf. Norma
That sounds like good advice, Norma. I happen to have several newly rooted cuttings and am happy to send one. What I don't have is an hort. oil spray.
If you cannot find one, Maybe I can send one to you and you can arrange to send it to Israel?
Again, WOW! This is great news. Thanks so much for offering your experience and help Norma. Just let me know how much the postage is and I'll reimburse you for it....or send a trade of something I have. Here's my web site http://www.geocities.com/bejagarden/list.html with all the things I have in my garden. Many, many things have seeds available or will soon, so if there is anything there that you like, just let me know. Some seeds that ar ready now that spring to mind at the moment are: Cuphea, Agapanthus, Portulaca (hehehe), Acmena, Aptenia, Aloe, various Salvia's, and cuttings from my Colquhounia. There are probably more.
Again, thanks, and let me know how you'd like to do this: trade or postage.

We must not send anything rooted. Hort spray, use some shampoo with oil in it. or hand soap with oil. I've even used Amway liquid soap. Borrow I don't think it a good idea to mail the cutting to me to be sent out and me send it to Israel. Doule postage that way. Wrap it in newspaper for the trip. It will hold up for months, we always take cuts of cactus and put them on top of racks to dry out, we want to see the roots, then we plant. Somethimes it take up to three months to get those roots. Now is a good time to mail, it leaves time for the roots to take hold before winter sets in.
Norma, does that mean NO roots, just cuttings, or are washed roots okay?
Darius, where are you sending, I would wash roots soap and water to send any place in the U.S. if it's going outside of the lower 48 I would take off all roots, I can't send to Hawaii, I can send to Alaska, outside of the U.S. Canada, Mexico, I wouldn't send at all, also include Australia in that list. Europe, seems to be okay if the package is small, no more than a pound, I have also put on the package botanical spec. for study, leaves, not roots. sprayed. Or I just send the package and declare it hobby gift. I also mark them as candy, and include candy, no chocolate it melts. LOL
Wrap well in newspaper or paper napkins. Label the plant in case it is opened, and play dumb.
Gosh I didn't know, thank you for telling me, now I do.
I think you can send only 12 or less at a time. make sure they are only cuts. They are afraid of Cal. soil, and I don't blame them. Be sure to wash and spray with pesticide everything that you receive as well and isolate it for two weeks from your own collection.
This is just basic rules to give you a start, have the person receiving it be responsible, not you.
Norma
I would be happy to send a couple cuttings. Darius what other colors do you have? I just love mine. Just let me know if I can help in anyway.
Sandy
Sandy, the only one I have where I have taken cuttings is Queen of the Night.
I have several other colors that I got this year as cuttings, so it will be a couple of years at least before those grow and bloom.
Julie... the Ball is Now in Your Court... what do you want to do? If you can figure out postage for no more than one pound air mail and send it to me, I'll send you a rooted cutting. I'm in the address exchange.
ilovejesus99, thanks so much for the offer. What colors do you have? I've only seen Queen of the Night in person. I've never seen the other colors except in books. But I'd love to find out what you have available :-)
Thanks Darius, I'll go to the P.O tomorrow and see what the minimum exchange is. We've got some dollars hanging around the house anyway, but I'm not sure it's enough. Maybe it would be more precise if you asked at your local P.O. how much a package of that size to Israel would cost. Then let me know and I'll send it to you.

Julie, I will try and remember to check on it Monday. Have too busy a day tomorrow.
darius, If you need Hort oil spray...just use Murfeys oil mix half-n-half with water and 1 teaspoon dish liquid...works great
I have this plant also if someone needs cuttings
I'm looking for other colors too
hugs, carol
I only got cuttings of other colors this year. Praying they survive.
I did find a hanging basket in the spring of 2003 it said blue and pink. The nursery I found the blue/pink only had one but a ton of white. It was sitting out in the rain. With no price tag I am not sure it was for sale but the girl said it was and was 12.95 like the white baskets and I bought it.
The buds were so tiny you needed a magnifying glass, So needless to say I missed them opening don't know if day or night bloomer. It will be next year before I would consider taking a cutting as it is not to full enough yet and is under a crepe myrtle and has a black fungus like everything else under and around the 30 ft crepe myrtle. I will move it next year farther down as my white ones are not directly under it. I guess it runs off crepe myrtle. All I know it is on everything under that tree.
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.
It is so frustrating sometimes you lick one thing just to get another.
I do have 3 different whites. The Queen of the night which has the 12 inch bloom and I believe is the one you speak of. And one with a 4-5 inch bloom and one with 2-3 inch bloom. All night bloomers and all special. I can take cuttings off all 3. Then with any success I will have some other colors in a year or 2. The wait seems long but cuttings are not very big.
Julie, Have you tried e-bay auctions? if you watch you may get a good deal but ask seller if they charge an arm and a leg for postage to you. Or even mail to you. LMK about the other whites. Maybe I could send all three if you want them and save you postage from Darius and me. Darius LMK if you would like to trade for other whites. You too Carol.
Blessings,
Sandy

Sandy, the information you posted above is wonderful.... and very hard to read for us old folks. Would you please try to make more paragraphs (more white space)? Thanks!!!
I didn't know Queen of the Night had different sized blooms. Mine are about 6 inches or so.
Sandy:
I think you might be talking about Epiphyllum hybrids rather than species when you talk about different flower colors and possible daytime blooming. Epi hybrids come in a wide range of colors and bloom in the daytime.
Epiphyllum oxypetalum is a species, is always night-blooming, and always has white flowers. There are several different kinds of cactus which carry the common garden name of "Night-Blooming Cereus" or "Queen of the Night". Each of them is also night blooming and only has white flowers.
Hope this helps.
Marilyn
Sandy, the ones you describe sound lovely...120inch bloom? Wow! But the one I'm looking for is a ver specific one. In a few years when you have cuttings from the Epis hybrids I'd love to get some then. But for now I just want the E. oxypetallum. :-) Thanks for letting me know which ones you have though!
-Julie
Thats fine. No harm done.
Sandy
Julie, darned if I didn't go to the post office yesterday to mail a Priority package, and forgot to ask them about mailing a cutting to you. :(
Will keep it on my list... and maybe on my mind, LOL.
LOL Darius! Well, I've waited 12 years....I can wait til you remember LOL. And for future reference, I'm a well-intentioned but forgetful one myself at times. So no worries. :-)
