I sort of made one. Have the water fall going into a small pond filled with plants and then into the main pond. Put cola crates in the bottom and covered with hardware cloth and then covered with pea gravel. The water flows thru the gravel and plant roots before in goes to the main pond. The plants help clear the water up and feed the fish with whatever flows down. Hope this helps some. Others will join and give you more options. Ted

That is real neat. I like the fisherman and are those lights around it? A little bit of real life art I say!

Here is mine about three months later.

First the bio filter, falls and vegie filter.

Now the pond, plants and planter box's made from tuffa. Will add more box's going up the top of the retaining wall to the falls.

Nice ponds, both of them!

bvjane, a veggie filter does not have to be large. It can be as simple as a 1/2 barrell filled with water hyacinths or can be an elaborate addition made however you'd like as long as its filled with plants and water passes through.

The idea is to have water circulate from the main pond, through the veggie filter then over a spillway and back into the main pond.

That is not ignorant, you should see how many questions I asked when I was trying to figure the whole ponding thing out, it was shameless, lol.

The "filter" part is the gravel, plants, roots, etc. (of the veggie bog) that the water passes over. It catches a lot of mulm and the plants suck up the nutrients that the algea thrives on. I've read repeatedly that a veggie bog should be at least 1/10 of the pond in surface size in order for it to work.

When I had my small pond I had a small, raised veggie bog about the size of a half barrell. It was full of hyacinths. They bloomed profusely and kept the water clean. That's gone now but I'll see if I can find a picture.

I have a bigger pond now and the veggie bog is 1/4 the size of the pond. It works great! It's filled with pea gravel and heavily planted. I am attaching a picture of it. It's kind of hard to see because it's surrounded by plants. This was taken earlier in the season so the bog plants are still very small. Now the whole thing is covered. This is the only filteration that I have on the pond, I also have a skimmer and my water is crystal clear.

Here is the pond. You can't see the veggie filter in this picture but you can see the spillway with the water from the veggie bog flowing over it. The veggie filter is behind and to the left of the spillway. Make sense?
