Banana's and Cockroaches?

Carencro, LA(Zone 8b)

My neighbors' friend told her that banana's attract Cockroaches. Has anyone found this to be true? Seems strange to me that one would have anything to do with the other. Thanks for looking, and have a great day:o)

Never noticed that when I lived in Texas and grew bananas. I did notice an attraction to them by date beetles, but not roaches.

Here they attract rats...have seen them up in the leaves and they will eat ripe ones if not cut.

Yuck

I have lots of bananas and no roaches. I was at a nursery this morning and he said not to use pine bark mulch because it draws cockroaches and termites. I hadn't heard that before.

The bananas here draw palmetto bugs, many people think of them as cockroaches. Palmetto Bugs fly, cockroaches do not. When you see one coming.............duck!!!!

Hehe Molly, don't feel too save as there are flying "true" Cockroaches.
I think the one you are refering to as the Palmetto Bug is what they call the Giant Waterbug which also has the Nickname of "Toe Biter" .

I didn't think they attracted roaches, but maybe the lady uses the pine bark mulch, and this is what is attracting them? Don't know, but I think I'd rather the bugs than the rats! Yikes! The day I see a rat in my banana's is the day they will cease to exist....LOL. I have some wood mulch, not pine bark, under them, but I use mainly leaves and pine needles, when I can get my hands on them. They work so much better than the mulch, for me anyways, and add good nutrients into the soil. Mulch looks better, though, I will say that.

We have palm tree rats down here, but haven't seen any in either the palms or bananas. If I do, you will hear me scream loudly, lol.
