Does anyone peek??

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

LOL I couldnt help it! I have a Susie baby that I have been waiting on, for what seems like forever, and that bud was so fat, and kept calling me "Shelly.. pssst SHELLY you know you want to split open my calyx a little and look" So I did.. the flower is about half way down the calyx, and cute, short little trendils said hello to me. I smiled real big, and as gently as possible closed the calyx back up.
Please tell me Im not the only one who has done this!

I don't open blooms. Just never made a habit of doing that or peeking in seed pods. I have had to tear a few of the calyx to let a bloom come out though. If you put a light behind a bloom bud you can see the bud inside. That, I have done.

I haven't either Shelly. I would be afraid I would hurt it. But now I am anxious to see this bloom! How long do you think till it emerges?

I haven't done that either, but I have used the flashlight method that Shirley mentioned. She told me about it LOL!

But, I have to add that last week a bug ate the lower portion of the calyx of the first bloom on Pink Floyd. I wondered whether or not it would continue to develop, and it is! Will probably open up within the next few days. Unfortunately it won't be worthy of a photo with half the calyx missing :( Gretchen

I haven't ever opened a bud, but I'm guilty of opening seed pods too soon. I've gotten much better and actually let the pods dry on the plants. If you guys keep talking about peeking inside the buds, I'm going to be tempted with a new bad habit though!

Hmmm, Hmmmm, La Tee Da.. You talkin' to me???? I wouldn't do that... Never.. Ever.. I don't feel them either, you know to see if they are a double...

Oh gosh!! lol Im glad Im not the only one.. lol I was getting worried. Maybe next time I will do the flashlight thing.

I do peek in to buds if I think I can spare one. I dont feel them.....I have to open them. It is a bad habit, I know! Curiosity kills the cat and I have to kill a bud lol!

I don't do that because when I opened several spent blooms to see if there were seed pods, I learned there were, indeed, seed pods, but they shriveled up and died because I disturbed them. Never again will I do such a thing!!!

Okay, here's my little Pink Floyd whose calyx was eaten by a bug last week. Seem to be doing fine. Maybe we'll have an open bloom or two tonight :)
