Those are very big! I have ee's for the first time this year and have enjoyed them in my garden. I just hope they don't get quite that big!

Where is a good place to purchase that kind of elephant ear?

Ladson, SC(Zone 8b)

Hi guys.....I don't remember the exact name of this plant but it was a bulb from Lowes or Home Depot. Can't remember which one. I planted it a couple of years ago.

Auburn Hills, MI(Zone 6a)

living there you dont have to dig,,, lucky !!

I would love that here !!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

It looks like Colocasia esculenta. Lowes, Home Depot and some nurseries carry the tubers in late spring and early summer.

Thanks Badseed,
I want these because I use the huge leaves to make bird baths out of concrete. They are beautiful. I have just started to do this and they turn out great. I only have the black ones which are smaller. The bigger leaf the deeper the bird bath.

very interesting .. useing the leaves and concrete.. could you take a few moments and post the technique... a few steps and materials.. cure and coloring...
I've seen a few about of diffrent leaves in concrete more sculpturally more than bird baths..
do you cast on it getting the botton or top.. are you upside down.. casting the inside of the bridbath on the leaf that's held in a dome fashon underneath..
I'd appreciate some help casting one... concrete and alot of acrylic in the mix.. some wire inside??? come on give us some clues... thanks ever so... Gordon

MIni hosta - my husband found nice, huge, bulbs for me believe it or not at Wal-mart! Only in the Spring of course - but they were way bigger than any I have seen other places.

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

My son wanted one of the 5 dollar e. ears at Wal-Mart. It is about 4 ft tall now.
I love the blk ones. Do they just stay smaller?

Bethel, OH(Zone 6a)

Bluegrass, the black ones stay smaller, The ones I got this year only reached about 10" long (leaf that is). The plant got to be about 4' tall. I have to take them in for the winter. I guess I can put the bulb in sawdust and put into my greenhouse for the winter. Anyone know of a better way to store the bulbs? Maybe next spring I will sent you a start of my black one if you want it.
Ncgardenaddict, I will keep a look out next spring for the bulbs. I just love to get as many as I can. I will post pictures of the birdbathe that I have. I still need to paint it.

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

I store mine in a brown paper bag.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Well, don't shoot the messenger - b/c of my zone I leave them in the ground. (()) I have black, green w/burgandy stems, variegated, and of course green.

I love these plants! They are tough plants! Unless of course they get too cold - I did kill my black ones 2 years ago but with a little more mulch my new ones made it last winter.

Hey Mini hosta - as winter closes in here I usually have 'offshoots' that I cut and give away - let me know if you are interested AND remind me with an e-mail if you don't mind. (Have a 2 yr old so things get 'hazy' sometimes!) I will be glad to mail you some!

Bethel, OH(Zone 6a)

Hey ncgardenaddict, I am very interested in offshoots. I will email you if I can figure out how to. I am new to this and trying to get used to it.

Bethel, OH(Zone 6a)

Hey ncgardenaddict, you got mail

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

I got a tip last year .. after years of storeing bulbs in bags and newspapers and in saw dust... to put them away each one wrapped in saran wrap.. it's the bulbs touching another that causes the rot.. and the saran wrap keeps them not touching anything.. it seemed to work on my dahalias.. elephant ears and the canas last winter .. although they did seem to dry out some.. I found no rot on any of them

Hey minihostalover, how big is that greenhouse? LOL I would like to fill it up. :)

Bethel, OH(Zone 6a)

Hey Badseed, It is 12' wide and 20' long. I have the base and hoops up and hope to put plastic on it next. But first I need to put gravel on floor. Hope to have it done before snow comes. I see you live in Cinti. I live about 20 minutes from the Big Mac Bridge, coming from st. rt. 52 New Richmond.
