Not green anymore! How should I take out the seeds to perserve them to grow and Trade?

Congrats on the ripening of the fruit Monterey:-)

Sorry I can't be of any help with the seed harvesting; mine never have any fruits for me to experiment on, but I am hopeful that someday I'll see one in person lol.

Soak them in their own juice (or I've heard orange juice will do) for a day or two to help break their dormancy if you're going to plant them yourself. Some varieties require stratification as well. I've always had variable success with passifloras. Some come up fast, some don't come up till the next season. Some don't come up at all.

I'm sure there are others here who know all the tricks and have had more consistent results than I. And of course these will be different from the named variety you got them from - though still probably good eating as are all of the edulis. I keep meaning to start a collection of p. edulis cuttings. . .

Did you taste the fruit????

Citrus Heights, CA(Zone 9b)

Yes tart , but tasty!

Floresville, TX(Zone 9a)

Thanks for the pics Monterey:-) I never realized there would be so many in there. Let us know what kind of germination you get from them. I ordered some passiflora seeds yesterday; it'll be my first attempt since around 3 years ago when I tried and failed to get any results.

BTW, I was reading in a new book, "Passionflowers of the World", (great great book btw) and it says that soaking in their own juice is actually not good, because it contains germination inhibitors that keep the seeds from sprouting before they are out of the fruit. Seems to make sense:-)

I cleaned up the seeds! Pretty cool. I have caerulea seed pics too.

My caerula seed pod turned yellow this week but it appears to be empty,by how light it feels.

Citrus Heights, CA(Zone 9b)

It should have turned orange. My Victoria was empty and it turned yellow.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Still have vitifolia amd Lady Maragret to ripen, any ideas what color they will be?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

My P. Aurantia are turning slightly yellow, but still very green, hard, and heavy. I hope there is something in them. I opened a green one and it was full of seeds.

Citrus Heights, CA(Zone 9b)

How can I pollenate my vitifolia? The bees are here 14 hours a day and nothing.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I heard a paint brush works well and early in the morning. I tried hand pollinating last year and had no luck at all. Question: I have a fruit on P. Incense. It feels very heavy right now. Is it self fruiting or did I have a critter in the garden?

Mesilla Park, NM

I had a pod on Lady Lavender and it turned yellow/orangeish, it had about 12 seeds... the first pod was hollow. I guess you never know, maybe one will have something in it.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Hard to know who did the pollenating, but you must have another passie in bloom,or self fertile maybe!

Citrus Heights, CA(Zone 9b)

I finally got my Coral Seas to bloom again. I think they don't bloom when it's hot.

Here's the caerulea seeds I mentioned. You get about 50+ out of each fruit.

These are my pollinators, they are really busy... I have about 12 varieties of passies.. there is fruit on almost all the passies, except the careula and vitifolia. In this photo, you can see incense with fruit. There are about five fruits on this one.

edited to say: these are two carpenter bees, I was taking a photo of the yellow carpenter bee when a black one joined in.

Your photo is gorgeous Monterey.. I just love all your pictures. Last year one of the bees sat on my shoulder and I walked into the house, then I saw it, and ran right out.. it did not bother me, but I almost had a heart attack. Just the thought. Only one of these has a stinger, but I don't remember which one, the yellow or the black. I was close but still don't know how to operate my camera.. I keep trying.. here is one where the yellow bee is about to fall off.

How did you know when to pick?

Citrus Heights, CA(Zone 9b)

They go from green to a dark reddish-purple, or let them fall of the plant that's how they do when they grow them for fruit sales. Here is the color I mean.Go back to the start of the topic.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Thanks. I guess I'll just wait for mine to fall.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

I think I just figured out which ones are fertile....great thread!

Gordonville, TX(Zone 7b)

Waiting for the fruit to drop is probably your best bet but, then a critter might beat you to it! I think this is a great thread, too! Might I ask, how are you guys using these P. spp. in the landscape?

Floresville, TX(Zone 9a)

Great pics, Monterey:-) The only thing I've seen visiting any of mine is hummingbirds, and a honeybee on occasion, no large bees at all. Probably why I never have any fruit.

I can't speak for anyone else imway2, but mine are all in pots except for one. They are growing on the house (nails/screws and string make a good exterior wall trellis), on wire mesh cages, trellises, posts, fences, into/on other plants, into each other sometimes, pretty much everywhere on everything you can find a tendril or two here:-)

Citrus Heights, CA(Zone 9b)

What's P. spp?

Floresville, TX(Zone 9a)

I assumed he/she was using an abbreviation for "Passiflora species"....

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Imway, use them to grow over arbors,I have some growing up a tiki hut as well.
