Here is my cane. This is the big plant, it has nice big canes that are a dark reddish purple. It is leaning a bit after the wind blew it over about a month ago. I proped it up, but it still grew a bit lop sided.
Purple sugar cane
That is too cool Susie
Can't wait for mine to grow!!!!
also ,I am seeing way too much grass in your yard.......
I have some sugarcane, does it root by just choppin it up and laying it on the ground and througing dirt on it?
ely?
Really a neat looking plant, Susie. Can't wait to get it growing. Gosh, another plant to hold over in the house. LOL!
Cool! I was given some here and was told that it was the native stuff. Anything cool they say that of...don't know...but it is neat!
Susie, mine is deep purple stemmed but green leafed! When I bought the canes I thought they would be ALL purple...**SIGH**..alas no deal. :-)
Kyle, your's sounds neat too! BTW, your babies are on their way to Iowa.
Elyear, canes about an inch thick or larger work best to cut. The sections need to have at least three rings and should be 12-18 inches long. Loosen up the soil where you want to plant the canes, and plant them on their sides about 4 inches deep. Water them in and keep moist, but not soggy. You should see baby sugar cane plants start to come up in a couple of weeks. They like even moisture, but don't seem to like soggy feet.
CC, how are yours doing? Have they made baby plants yet?
Yup,I have purple grass......LOL
I love purple
Have I said that before?
thanks calalily, I have a common green one and I was wondering if you could do it the same way....
thanks,
ely
What a neat plant!
I went to a real estate office today(that's where I was supposed to be when I stopped at the nursery, lol) and the agent also owns sugar cane fields. He said now is the time to chop the canes to make more, before they get brittle. He said if you split the cane by accident when taking cuttings it won't grow. I didn't know that. He said cane clumps are good for about 7 years then they need replaced with new ones. He is going to trade me two commercial varieties for a piece of my purple! He said when the clumps get too old, they aren't as tall and pretty, but start to stay short and look ratty and kind of yellow.
Calalily, could I post one of these sugarcane + pool pictures to finnish gardening forum?
We are having a conversation of swimmingpools and I would like to show yours:)
Wow, I tried a bunch of times to see this thread and couldn't and now it works! Yes Mitjo, you can use my picture for the Finnish gardening site. If you need a better picture of the pool, let me know and I'll try to get a full shot so you can see the shape.
wow thats a KILLER pool you got there too! ;)
Yeah, but it comes with a killer gator........
I never thought of growing sugar cane as an ornamental.. but it is very pretty and thanks for all the tips on growing it
Thank Calalily!
Yes, it would be great if you took a picture of the whole pool area!
Here in South Louisiana a lot of the cane farmers still practice the burning of the sugar cane fields just prior to harvest. This is done to remove the dry chaff and leaves to make the canes easier to handle. Some people don't care for the smoke, etc. that is created from the burning, but I have always loved that burnt sugar smell when they start burning the fields.
They burn them here too. It burns fast. If conditions are just right, it burns the chaff without burning the cane(which turns the sap into molasses and it brings less money). They watch for the cane to start to bend out a bit, then it's called "forty ton cane" and is perfect for harvest.
