OK kell...you wanted a picture so here it is. The flowers are very pretty, but I wish they smelled better!
Got seed pods. How long does it take for them to mature and do they turn brown? I saw where someone tied old pantyhose around them. Never had a datura before so have no idea when to harvest seeds.
Pretty in triplicate
Ginger, your Dat is beautiful. The seed pod will turn brown and pop open and panty hose or something around it to catch the seeds is a good idea.
Thanks!!
Gosh, that is a beautiful dat. It takes a while for the pod to mature and it will crack and open. That is when you pick it. If you leave it a while after it cracks, many seeds will fall on the ground. I've used pieces of panty hose tied losely around a pod that I wanted to save and it works great. Generally, the pods will not turn brown before they crack. At least on the ones that I've had. Once it does crack, I would remove the seeds to dry.
That is a beautiful dat!!! I really love them and I'm begging my triple yellow to grow, grow, grow! LOL Last year it seemed like I waited 3 months for some pods to ripen. Some will faster than others.....and I'm sure a lot depends on the weather. Good luck!
Thats gorgeous!
Oh wow! Sure is pretty!!
So glad you posted it. It just beautiful!
Ginger how beautiful!!! I love it! I ended up with only the double yellow :(
What a beauty!
Ginger, Wow! I have never seen anything like it. Its beautiful, how each corolla grows free of one another :) I wish you luck with the pods. They will ripe fast in your zone as they love heat :)
Julie, I hope that you will have the opportunity to grow the triple yellow in the future. Its a kind of discouraging growing them from seeds and wait so long just to discover, it wasn't the right variety :( The double/triple specimens of D. metel hybrids can be tricky, when you grow them from seeds, though. As many of them are crosses between other double/ triple forms, it is far from always, that they come true from seeds.

Gosh is that pretty!
Ginger, that is the "poofiest" looking datura I have ever seen - just beautiful! You did an excellent job growing this plant! I sure hope it will set seeds and you get some this nice next year. I think you should add your picture to Plants Database http://davesgarden.com/pdb/go/60040/index.html
Very pretty -- This year, I grew out 50-odd dats and I can promise you I didn't get anything that looked like yours!!!
buuuuteeeeful!
*BLUSH* Thank you all for the nice comments! This is the only dat that I have...it's the one I got from Sugar at the Fl. RU. She had it labled as double, but it throws both double and triple blooms.
I was sooo excited that it was featured in today's newsletter...what determines that?
It is planted in the ground. Will it be okay over the winter or do I need to do something special for it? Also can a branch be whacked and rooted like brugs?
I've never tried to root cuttings from Dats. Have only grown seeds. I would think it would be hardy for your area. I don't know what your zone is, but at the least, it might come back from the roots. I used to think that pictures were chosen by the number of views. Not sure if that is right though.
Ohhhh very beautiful, please save its seeds for us.
I plan on saving the seeds..another new venture for me. Guess I need to find some old pantyhose. LOL And I submitted it to the PDB as TomH3787 suggested.
Ginger, that is gorgeous! The white blooming ones have seed pods that turn brown, the yellow and purple don't from my experience. You can do the panty hose thing or just walk out there and look every 5 minutes for several weeks. Either way works!
Way to go girl!
I have had some come back after a mild winter but is best to just start new ones from seeds each spring in our area.
Wow!!!! looks like its wearing a ruffled skirt. Beautiful. did you say the name of this one and i missed it? wonderful. if seeds need homes i am open on this one as my daughter loves yellow.
Agian WOW!!!
