In all the years we have lived here and had baby chicks we have never had one fall down into the ceramic drain that one of the downspouts of the roof runs into. I heard it when I went outside this morning and looked all over but could not find it. Then I realized that the sound was coming from that drain pipe. I came in and told Jack about it. He quickly and graciously came out, removed the downspout and was looking for something to help me reach the chick. I found some gutter screen and folded it and put it down the drain for the chick to climb on and hopefully make its way out to safety. Well, it did get onto the screening quickly and stayed there while I slowly and carefully pulled it up and out of the drain. I had caught one of the 2 hens who share this clutch of 8 baby chicks and she was either encouraging the chick or giving me what-for for catching and holding her. When we got the chick safely out we made a cover for the drain so this will never happen again. I caught all the chicks and the 2 mothers tonight and put them in the cage and can't see that the chick has suffered any for its experience.
