Purple Datura Bud and Bloom

Lewiston, CA(Zone 7b)

I started this from seeds & ended up with about 10 plants. I gave a few away & some of them are blooming different. Mine the center comes out first them the outer petal/flower. The ones I gave my neighbor opens the opposite. Outside first then the inside blooms out. So far I do not have a seed pod on mine but my neighbor does. I'll also post one of it open.

That is a beautiful flower, BJ. It is rare to see, that the inner flower grows free of the outer as your flower do :) If you handpollinate the flower you can get it to set a seedpod and grow it again from seeds. It is definitly a keeper :)

Pretty bloom!!

I read someplace that the reason the dats self pollinate is because first, the bloom points up, and second, the stigma is lower than the anthers with the pollen, so the pollen automatically falls on the stigma. Thought it was interesting to read because I've never looked inside a dat bloom.

The second plant is starting to bloom, it will be interesting to see if it does the same thing. I might try to see if I can hand polinate it.
I'll post another pic of the new one when it blooms.

WOW! This has been such a disapointing year for Dat's here. I tried starting several D. Tatula, D. Metal, D. Innoxia and 1 that was labeled yellow double bloom. I ended up with tons of D. Innoxia and tones of D. Metal I believe and I'm killing off thhe D. Metal. All the double yellows never germed and the Tatula's all came up identicle to Metal. The only thing that was worth keeping was my boring old Innoxia for its huge white blooms.
Where did you find these seeds? I desperately want something worth keeping. If you get plenty of seed pod's, do you think I could buy some seeds? That is a beauty and a must have for our garden.
OH BTW, My nieghbor came over and saw the D. Metal and she called it a weed that used to grow wild all around their seed co. busyness. Isn't that special?LOL I didn't think so either.

BjsBloomers, may I put my name in for some seed should you get any viable pods? I'm a sucker for purple blooms.
Those white inner flowers really make the purple pop.

DITTO I love purple too!

Gorgeous bloom-my daturas are small seedlings of double yellow-seeds I traded on another forum. Hope they are as nice as yours, maybe we could trade if I should ever get buds and pods. How long was it from seed to flower? Have never grown them before. This could become obsessive.

Good to see you JD!! I think that possibly the weed you mentioned might be Jimsom Weed. Do you (or anyone) know if 'Marsh Mallow' might be a datura??? They grow wild here, pretty white blooms and I've heard them called Jimson Weed, as well as Marsh Mallow...

Shinny, By the way, you know we are only 119 miles from each other! This plant was started from seed in Feb. The one my neighbor has bloomed over a month ago. Her's has a pod on it so I figure mine may too.
The other plant that is getting ready to bloom (maybe tomorrow) has 5 blooms that arew opening & 3 more right behind it.
My white is blooming now & smells wonderful! These were all started about the same time. If I do get seeds I'll surely have some for trade.
I'm waiting for all those blooms to open!!! :)

Lewiston, CA(Zone 7b)

Well here's 3 at once blooming & there are 3 more right behind it. It does smell pretty good when the blooms are newly opened. I sure hope I do get seeds from this one. There is a close up of one of the blooms I'll post also.
Still no buds on my Brug, I keep waiting!

One of it close up. I think these are striking blooms, too bad they only last one day in this heat.

Pretty blooms.

Looks like double or triple Datura. My triple purple Datura has been blooming it's head off all summer. It is still blooming with about 13 or so seedpods in various sizes. Now with all this windy rainy weather we have been having here in PA, I do so hope the plant makes it till all the seedpods are mature. I have been collecting seed of my Datura stramonium (Jimsonweed) and have one lonely seedpod on my Variegated Datura mississippiensis and I am going to grow more of these next summer, at least enough to share seeds til then. I also have a triple yellow datura I started from seed & it is blooming (bloomed with 1 flower, now has 3 buds on it) but no seedpods as yet.

A few months back a friend gave me some seeds from a purple and white Dat she had. I planted them and now have about 7 beautiful plants. some of the blooms are real frilly and purple and white mixed. Others are like picture, with flower in a flower. Then I found some info on internet about Brugs. I am hooked and broke. My Dats have a fair amount of seed pods. I will be happy to share when they mature. I live in South Carolina so they shoud all mature. I am looking for the triple yellow Dat. Carol (nancyjean)

I have 1 yellow dat....it has thrown both double and triple blooms. It has 6 or 8 pods at the moment. My first venture with them, but if I manage to collect the seeds I'll be happy to trade some of my yellow for some of your purple.

Hi Carol. Welcome to Dave's and the Brug addiction. great to see you here.

Lewiston, CA(Zone 7b)

These are such striking flowers. I just love them. Next year I'll not plant them in full sun as in the afternoon the plant & blossoms just melt. I have been putting an umbrella over them in the afternoons, to help the blooms last a little longer.
Welcome to the addiction Carol! You'll be sorry! I didn't know what a Brug or Dat was a year ago, Now I have probably 20 Brugs & several Dats!
It will be crowed in the green hut this winter!

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

I probably already have more then my Florida room can handle. Oh well, I guess I will have to make room. I got to have a couple more brugs, and must have double or triple Dat. Carol
