Thanks to Ada, I've got a few Brug plants and they are starting to bloom.
They have survived some neglect especially recently as we had an illness and death in the family that had me away from the house a lot.
(Mother in law who was 80 passed away. She had a good life, but it's still sad for all of us.)
She's lost a lot of leaves, but dispite the lack of regular waterings, Maya is blooming her little heart out for me. The aroma on my front porch last night had to be smelt to be believed! I know you've all been there, but it's a first for me.
Thanks so very much Ada and the rest of the great members of this forum for getting me started with this wonderful addiction.
Ada, I've got blooms ......... Here's Maya
Here's a look at one of the blossoms close up.
Yes that's a sweater I have on ............ here it is August 13th and the temps are in the mid 60's at best. The blooms are getting darker ............. if it's true that the blooms are darker in cool weather these beauties should be real dark real soon!
So Sorry about MIL,a good life is all we can ask.
Your plant looks great! Now you see why we hoot about the scent so much.
It is cool here,no sweater but cool,I do not have one bloom right now,so sniff them for me!
Maya is a beautiful brug, glad you got to smell and see your first blooms, it just gets better!
Sorry about MIL, but we should all live life to the fullest and hope for a good ending, with no pain.
Kathy, I'm so sorry to hear that you guys have lost your mother in law. I'm sure it has been a rough time for you, but maybe Ada's brug has brought enough joy to you that it is helping you get through this time. I'm sure she is a beauty that will be enjoyed for a long time to come. Now, can I send some of our cool weather back up north? I heard the weatherman say that we could set a new record low tonight, in the forties. This is ridiculous weather. It is August for Pete's sake. Take care now.
Shirley and all thanks for the kind thoughts, it is appreciated.
But you CAN NOT send any more cool weather up here! This has been the coolest summer I can remember. My flowers seem to have loved it, but my veggie gardens are pitiful. I'll be lucky to get one good tomato, and I planted dozens of plants.
It's hard to take this cool weather when our warm season is so short to begin with. Oh well ............ Don't gardeners always say the garden will be even better next year.
I have lots of tomatoes if I could just get through the weeds to get to them. You are right...I always say, "there is always next year"...same thing.
It's a beauty, Kathy Looks like it loves where it's at.... :)
So sorry for your loss....
Its beautiful!
Nice shaped plant and beautiful blooms!
Kathy, I'm so sorry to hear about your Mother in law. My prayers are with you and your family. Your Maya looks great. It doesn't look like it's been neglected. I'm so glad you got to finally see and smell some Brug blooms. Hope the others soon bloom for you.
It is beautiful ... one of my favorites. Now if mine would only bloom.
Kathy .. sorry about your MIL.
Hi Kathy, I just joined DG- thanks to Ada telling me about it. She also gave me my start of Brugs! my what a wonderful lady she is! I just luv her!
Sorry to hear about your MIL. I know the Maya blooming had to cheer you up. Somehow these flowers (and the people who grow them) know just when to do something special for others! guess so, they're angels!
Sandra
Im so sorry for the loss in your family. Its a beautiful brug!
Sandra, welcome to the brug forum and Daves Garden.
Kathy so sorry to hear about your mother-in law it looks like she led a good life. O n the weather i live in upstate new york where it has been cool and rainy last month we had only 38 % sun for the month. My brugs all 70 of them are doing well
Wow Bob!! You really must be busy keeping them all cared for. How long have you been growing brugs? I'll bet your place looks awesome.
Hi, Sandra. Welcome to Dave's and the Brug addiction. Great to see you here. This is a great site with great friends.

Welcome Sandra, we are both lucky to have discovered a friend in Ada.
You'll love Dave's Garden.
Thanks for the thoughts everyone. Mom had a great life, and like Root said, that's all we can ask. I know she's smiling down on my garden and the Brugs.
Just beautiful!
Kathy, So sorry about your MIL. I too , am new to Dav's. Sandra told me about it. We live in same area. Ada also blessed me with some great Brugs. What a wonderful lady. Hi ADA, Your children are doing great. I have discovered plants folks are so generous. I am glad to be here. Carol
Big welcomes to Sandra and Carol! Glad you have joined us all here. Looks like Ada is spreading this great disease but at least she is also telling you about our support group too!!
Tree_climber, looking great! So sorry to hear of your loss.
Welcome Nancy and Carol!!!
Welcome Carol.
I had to laugh about the comment that Ada is at least telling people about the support group.
We definately need it.
Hi Carol. Glad to have you here. Ada is a sweetie to share so much with all of us.
Just an update.........
The only thing else I had blooming was a Frosty Pink, so I dabbed some of it's pollen on a couple of Maya blooms. I've got 2 seed pods forming!
Exciting to me, but probably not that exciting a cross to you guys.
How long does it take for a seed pod to mature?
Way too long. LOL! I find that most take around three to four months, but some have had them sooner.
I was afraid of that.
I am planning on keeping Maya in the house as a house plant for the winter. Any chance the pods will continue to develope?
I've got to check my book ...........
They don't have to have a dormant period do they???
Well brugie i have 80 brugs growing like weeds many are in bloom and others do not even show signs i grow so many other plants they keep me real busy especially the hostas i have over 2500 plants 510 varieties plus a pond and many more shrubs and prennials, even though we had all this rain the garden is great. Bob
Kathy i bet your mil is smiling down on you and happy that brug is blooming. bob
I believe it is good to give them some time without fertilizer so they will rest. During Dec. and Jan is a good time to do that, but the seed pods will hold on anyway. I had pods mature in our cold basement a couple of years ago. They didn't see to mind being cold and not having the fertilizer.
Bob, I have a lot of brugs that haven't bloomed this year. I have no idea why other than our temps have fluctuated so much and this must have been the coolest summer on record. I know that August was right in there for the coolest. So darned cold that I had the furnace on a day or two.
