Don't know where to plant....

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

for those brugs!!!! I am all confusing.. I said that spot then I changed my mind. not this spot.. and walking around yard and find place for brugs.. then I fed up and not know what to think... Can you help to decide? lol..

YOu see.. I have about 40 of them.. I would like to keep few in pots.. See our yard are large.. no fence. I would like to plant few brugs by the house but I can't. DH will have dirts dump around the house and plow it level around house.. I am stuck.. I have to plant them away from house where tractor wont run over. He need lots of space to ride tractor around.. We only cut grasses less 5 acres.. ( we own 18 acres of land).. I couldnt afford to buy any to put mixture int he hole before plant the brugs.. but i have some fertizler that I can put few before plant the brug in the ground. One thing, I hate weeds that grow around brug plant.. you know what I am talking about. Maybe I can plant brug then put newspaper and plastic sheet around and put wood mulches on it.. It would look nice.. GOod thing I have tiller... I can tiller to make few brug gardens. I will be responsible to use push lawnmower to (trim) cut grass around plants.. My Dh dont want to fool with it..

I am so GLAD that we lives in warm climate that I can leave them in ground around year! I have no GH.. I can put few in garage for the winter.. but not all my plants..

Here's the photos.. can you give me some idea.. where to plant.. Notice.. that mobile trailer in background of picture.. it will be pull out this end of month.. Yay! I can't wait to rid of this trailer.. It's eye sore for me!

See the 1st pic.. YOu can see brugs in black pots.. Is it good place to plant there. There's two pine trees beore the brugs.. There's Gardenia, two azaleas.. It's in back yard..

You have lots of room to plant, but if it were me, I would think about where I could enjoy them most, especially the fragrance and also about difficulty in watering. I hate dragging a lot of garden hose around and if you plant them far from the house, you may have trouble with watering. If you do mulch them, I would use something that moisture can go through and not plastic. When it rains, you want the water to get to the roots. I think you will just have to look at your yard and imagine what it could look like. It would be hard for me to advise you without actually being in your yard. That is a lot of yard to mow....I can see why your DH wouldn't want to trim around brugs or any other plants. It must take a full day to get it all mowed.

Hi Trisha, Brugie is so right about the hose, lol! Another thing I'd watch is to let them get as much morning sun as possible and shade in the late afternoon.

I went thru this myself, regraded the front yard, and then said 'now what'? I hope you can learn from some of the mistakes I made, and from some of the better ideas. The best thing I did was to make a long raised bed, I was able to till in leaves for the whole bed, and then just enriched the planting holes with Nature's Helper, composted manure and fertilizer. I run a soaker hose just under the mulch.

I thought I had it all figured out...

Until they grew up! I thought 3 feet each way was enough, NOT! I also didn't count on some of them getting so big so fast, and others staying short :(

Yes, Thanks for remind me about water hose.. dragggging.. around.. We have 6 water facuet outside around house... I think I would make a big long raise bed for them.. in back yard on right side where I can enjoy the smell and watch it grow.. It can be reach to water them from the water facuet.. But they will get lots of sun during day time but in the early eveing, they will get shade.. But I am thinking about plant some bananas plants to give them some shades in the afternoon? It would be great idea.. I guess I will have to tiller grass first then collect some leaves whatever I can find... I am sure Pine needles will be great mulch to keep them mositures. We have full of pine trees! I can put them on top of dirts..

How far apart for each plant that I should plant in ground.. LMK..

Yes, lots of grass to mow! Good thing we have tractor that will do.. DH is getting me a new riding lawnmower in winter time. WE are waiting for price $$ to go down! I can go and mow around plants and around house. It would be much easier!

I did the same thing this year Vi. My brugs are way too close and the blooms are stuck inside the plants on each side of a blooming brug. Way too close. I would say at least six foot and in some cases, that isn't even enough. It also depends on how you grow your brugs....bush or tree. Have fun Trisha. You may have to just punt and hope for the best and maybe be prepared to do some rearranging later on.

Boy what I'd give to have 18 acres to wander around! of course, I, like you Minishnuz walk around forever deciding where to plant anything and I only have a little over 2 acres of yard. Half the fun is moving stuff around anyway. You get a whole new look at no expense (well,,,,maybe some backaches) lol

Violabird, I love the raised bed idea. Nice brugs too! I only have one brug planted in the yard - the few others I have are in pots. But that's only because I have so few and I'm afraid I might lose them over the winter in the yard. Once the potted ones get big enough to take cuttings, I'll root some more and put them in the yard. My one that's in the yard has done super!

Good luck to both of you! Sandra

Sandra, I originally did the raised bed idea to sink my pots in (easier to dig out) but when I saw how quick they grew in the ground, I changed my mind. I must say that with this Georgia clay, it's the only way to go, they seem to love it and I don't need to water much, nor worry about too much water. I'm also hoping it will warm up quicker in the Spring. We'll see...

Vi, I think that would work for my soil here in SC too. It's not the best but we usually bring in compost from the landfill to raise the beds a little and the earthworms really get started up when we add it. Just haven't raised them as high as yours but you know, that would probably work better because it stays wet on our place and the height would get them out of the soggy bottoms. (DH has to make some more runs to the landfill.......) lol ,Sandra

Sandra, I know you're going to have loads of beds before you're thru. LOL
