Homey D's had "dwarf" banana plants for sale this week. I need to know if any of you have raised a banana plant indoors. I have a sunroom it would live in in the winter and it could have full sun outdoors all summer. they are about 2 feet tall now, but I couldn't take in a plant that would outgrow my house.
banana as houseplant
yes.. I keep my blood bananas inside during the winter growing as a houseplant... you shouldn't overgrow it during the winter there in MA .. although it sometimes lasts a long time.. I'd bring a 16' plant inside at mothers.. but the flowering was so messy it soon bacame a task to keep it's area clean as it would drop flower parts all over.. Gordon
I live in zone 6 too. What do you do when the plants get to tall for room? Just trim them back a few feet? I only have one and it will be OK this time.
All mine are dwarf varieties, I haul them in to the sunniest room come fall, and water about once a week, The growth slows down to almost nothing in winter so dont overwater it and dont fertilize. I will loose some leaves but not many, and when springtime hits they start going back outside. I tend to drag them in and out when it starts getting way too cold at night, They have survived a light frost with just loosing some leaves but didnt hurt the plant itself.
Thank you all for the encouragement. I needed to know about it slowing down in winter. the sun room is sunny but cool in the winter time. It has heat but doesn't get as hot as the rest of the house. I am going to try one! I will report back in when I get it home! Thanks again everyone.

I did it! I bought the banana plant from Homey D's. I am now the proud owner of Musa acuminata 'Novak' and we'll see what happens. It recommends a bigger pot on the label and I am going to pot it up tomorrow. Couldn't get outside today because of the monsoon.
I also bought Novak. It's still outside in a pot but will bring it in soon as it gets a little cooler. Can't wait to see how it does.
