I got a catalog from Breck's that featured a tulip that starts out with yellow blooms that are supposed to change to an orange. Even more amazing, this tulip is supposed to multiply.
Now I know a couple of years ago Breck's (which used to be a great company at one time), Gurney's, Stark Bros. and a couple of others were all owned by the same company that went bankrupt. Now their catalogs are coming out again. Did they just reorganize or were they bought out?
I would love to buy this tulip if the ad is true and was hoping someone had experience with this tulip.
Daydream Tulip - unbelievable?
I had a quick look for Daydream Tulip on the net and found this site http://gardenartbysandpiper.com/product.php/bk-67419.html
as well as Breck's. The picture shows the flowers at all stages, with a wonderful range of colours. It certainly looks a lovely tulip.
From what I remember of this variety is that there was not that much yellow in them. This variety will do well though.
thanks all, but I still wonder if I can trust Breck's
Brecks has 58% positive in garden watchdog, but almost all of the recent comments are negative. I got a $20 free coupon and sent for dutch irises, no cost to me. That is about the only way I will order from brecks/springhill/gurney and so on. I say only order if you can afford to take the loss, and then hope for the best.
kenndyh, the cost at this tulip at Garden Art by Sandpaper was $2.28 each. It is 7 bulbs for $9.99 at Breck's. Now if they actually ship them and they are decent bulbs, then that is a bargain. But boy, the skeptics are everywhere......
These are the ones I had this spring

and they were beautiful. Sorry I didn't take any pictures. I got them at Walmart last fall.
Well, bleek to the rescue again! He can get us Daydream at a great price if I can get 3 other gardeners to join in as he has to order 100 at a time. The price is $8 for 5 bulbs plus shipping but you get 20 more free! I'm in. Bleek if you see this, we need to know what the shipping is so I can send you $$$....
RE: Breck's and the statement that tulip Daydream "multiplies annually." I wrote to Breck's and asked for specific horticulture information on HOW the bulb(s) multiply and what was required to achieve such results. The response I received follows. Of course, if I'm reading this properly, ANY tulip could be said to multiply if you're willing to dig it up, separate the bulblets and wait two or three years for them to mature to blooming size. I have no experience in terms of dealing with or buying from Breck's, but methinks I smell a clever marketing ploy here! Check it out:
FROM BRECK'S CUSTOMER SERVICE DEPARTMENT:
Water well for 6-8 weeks at temperatures below 40 degrees F after
planting. Mix peat moss, compost, or well-rotted manure into the soil to
improve drainage. Mix in bonemeal or superphosphate at planting. Feed
with a 5-10-5 fertilizer in subsequent falls and as growth emerges in
the spring. Remove flowers as they fade. Leave foliage intact until it
dies back naturally. Lift bulbs every 3-4 years after foliage dies and
separate bulblets. Replant immediately or store in a cool place over the
summer to replant in the fall. The bulblets may be planted like the
parents but may not bloom until it matures in 2-3 seasons.
I did receive some of the ones I ordered from Breck's today. None of them were Daydream because we order them through Bleek.
The tulip bulbs are large and firm, very nice. I hope Breck's is trying to build up its reputation again. Hopefully it is under new management since the bancruptcy.
I got Pink Impression (listed as a true perennial tulip), Zurel (a purple and white) and Apricot Beauty which I don't know much about but it's been around awhile.
So far, so good.
