A tropical corner with a pond on the Roof Top...

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

Well I'm still awaiting the warm summer evenings with the air still.. and the heaven'y aroma of the two jasmines and the dozen brugs... plumeria and the redflame honeysuckle and the moonflowers and niccotina filling the air with a mixture of intoxicants to complete the sensation of the tropical corner.. this year I've everything going except the warn nights with the still air.. Welll 6 of 8 isn't bad... that's 75% of the effect.. Gordon

hi gordon,
Just beautiful! Am I correct in understanding that this is located on a roof? like on a building roof???!

wow. you folks amaze me!

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

It looks great. How do you get your pond to look "foggy"?

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

That is Amazing!! Great looking plants!!
Odd year for weather,we had record low last night.

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

WELL... Thanks for the complements.. Yes Lisa is on a roof top just like on top of a building... it's at the 5 th floor level but with no higher buildings about.. it's good to still be amaised..
Calalily.. the pond looks foggy as it is fog... in the water is a ultrasonic fog generator.. great effect with the lighting at night with the still air when the fog waffs over the pond and across the plants ad onto the roof..and the plants love it.. Gordon

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

wow...my small town, zone 9, chunk of land brain is really amazed..LOL!

on a roof...*shakes head*....

:0)

Panhandle, FL(Zone 8a)

Gordon, that is beautiful! How great to have that in the middle of city life! What do you do with it all in the winter? I too am amazed!

Fort Pierce, FL(Zone 10a)

This is really lovely. When I went to NYC for the first time, of course I was looking up at the TALL buildings (just a hick tourist), and it seemed like every window had a plant sitting in it. Walking around it seemed that everybody has a dog too. My kind of city!

Panhandle, FL(Zone 8a)

pati, I loved the dog walkers, would have 5-8 dogs on leashes going for walks!

Homestead, FL(Zone 10b)

That's beautiful Gordon. I live in Florida and my garden doesn't look that good.

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

Lisa.. said:my small town, zone 9, chunk of land brain is really amazed..LOL! well as a born delta boy [MS] I can say I know how to make a pond.. and all you do is dig a hole... but on the roof I caught the water in a rubber box I made up... inbetween the planters.. but I guess your amaisement is why now how.. cuz I can.. and I love it..
Weeds ... yes.. it all comes down and lives alive and growing near a window.. and all around the house.. some is reduced to corms or bulbs and wrapped in saran wrap and stored in the hallway..
The dogs are great. I like the dog walkers that jump their dears into the flowers around the street trees .. to give the dears a country experience [ do it in the dirt ] to their constant duties.. this picture is along the side of the pond in the back part Gordon

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Really cool! I have been looking for a fogger since I borrowed some pond books a couple of weeks ago!

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I had no idea those exixted. I've seen the little waterfalls in the mall shops, but didn't know they made them for big ponds!

Lappeenranta, Finland(Zone 3a)

You have really great looking roof garden Gordon! And the pond is looking really neat.
Could we see more pictures of that lovely place.

In Finland that wouldnt be possible, but I really wonder how does it work. Is you appartment on the top floor and can you get right to the roof your appartment? How large is the roof?:)

Heheheh.
And one more guestion. You info says you live in Brooklyn, is the same Brooklyn which is in the NYC? Nort-New York City.

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

http://www.fountainology.com/aaccess1.html
http://www.mainlandmart.com/foggers.html
these are some fogger sources.. I got a three head unit but I should have gone alll the way and got a 5 head unit.. to work in the wind better .. I don't think fish would like them.. I also tried to buy one without the lighting .. but they seemed to have sent one with red lighting.. makes it look like a volcano at night.. II was going to do my own lighting..
we have deeded right to the roof as part of the co-op here... but that didn't stop one of the lawyers on the ground floor from calling the building department.. they came and wrote a ticket which I appeared for.. and after 5 sessions with them and a judge like fellow I convinced them it wasn't illegal plant storage.. which was what the ticket was for... most of what you see isn't on the roof at all.. but is on the side walls.. bearing walls and the front and back planters and fence is a long boxbeam.. spanning the 22 ft to the bearing walls.. and there is additional support under it all the green roof .. the lawn helps with heating and cooling of my unit..
Yes.. it 's that Brooklyn... it's actually just east and a bit south of the city.. out on long island really ok a picture of the middle of it all.. promise you won't laugh... Gordon

Mount Hermon, LA(Zone 8b)

Wait a minute.... You got a ticket for having a garden? What's this world coming to? I think I'd have to drop a big bag of Miracle-Gro on that ground-floor lawyer's head! LOL. Your place is beautiful!

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

LOL Jean! Don't waste the "gro"..use something like...uhmm, cow manure compost, much more effective!

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

well thanks again... yes I was devistated .. and I had thought momentairly of something going over .. seems he's at a desk under a skylight in an extention off the back of the building... but I'm supercareful not to loose anything there..
hope to be in LA next Saturday.. hope you've got somme good weather for me then... where should I go to see some knock out tropicals while I'm there... guess I'll be spending most of it in New Orleans then headding east along the coast...
sure do miss the food there... KBON I can get on the computer .. the food is another story... I can't wate.. got so much to get hooked up to the drip irrigation system this year... I was going to leave yesterday.. but caught a day of rain.. and today I didn't quite finish... c'est la vie... Gordon

Gordon,
I know what you mean about the food! I truly think we have some of the best food in the USofA! When we travel, I bring my grub with me. Too bad I will not be home next Saturday, I would tell you to head west and bring a shovel! LOL. You could raid my garden....sha!

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Pssssstt Gordon, Lisa won't be home saturday, take a shovel, hint hint.

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Wow! Your garden is just beautiful. Thanks for the pictures.

Crestview, FL(Zone 7b)

Gordon... you have certainly made yourself a beautiful paradise there.

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

Gordon, beautiful roof garden pictures. thanks for posting. Hope you had a great time in LA. My oldest son and family live in Baton Rouge, and I love to go visit them especially for the food . Donna

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Gordon, than you so much for the links! I think I won't be buying a fogger any time soon though. LOL You said you should have gotten a larger one. What size do you think you'd need for a 10' round pond? Oh, and why do you think fish might not like it? I think they look totally neat and would make quite an impact in the evening! I only saw the pics in a pond book from the library and thought they were awesome. I guess you are the only person I *know* that has one. Thanks again!

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

After our discussion in the passiflora thread I found this one Gordon....your rooftop garden truly is amazing and the view continues to take my breath away. I know your on holidays now but I had to post again how much I've enjoyed looking at your urban jungle!

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

WELL CONTINUED THANKS FOLKS.. yes it is a love ..beyound all reason..
Thanks root dr..
Weeds.. how come .. well it was a love.. and following her there after the army in '67.. and then it was so lovely... and I guess I stayed ... and loved it..
Lisa .. thanks for the offer .. too bad you're away.. so where can I view some if I promise not to bring my shovel.. arriving on friday..
MZMunchkin.. yes a paradise indeed.. what do they say about a garden and God... working closely with God here.. I just keep it wet..
ALOHAHoya 2000 where do they go... well lately they come in and live with me... plumeria growing in the winter around the dinning room table made of lovely tropical woods helps to get through the winter.. I keep many of them alive and growing through he winter .. passion flowers are the curtains of the lower light windows.. bulbs are dug and wrapped in saran wrap and stored.. I don't have a place to put them into dormancy.. so the tropicals I grow year round..
BAdseed.. well for 10' diam pond I'd get the bigger 5 element unit.. it'd be none too much.. they do generate some heat at the unit.. so the fish might not like it.. and I guess there's a sound.
SO>>> here at mothers.. there's a pile of things I've left over the years here's her elephant ears.. and following the moonflowers.. her plumeria and brugs are inbetween flushes today.. All the best there... Gordon
