DVD media

Fayette, IA(Zone 4b)

Just got my first DVD burner, and I am baffled by the media choice. I have a Sony burner that will do DVD-R+ or - ; DVD-RW+ or - as well as all the variations and permutations of CDs. I can't afford to start out by buying all the different formats. Which one is reputed to be compatible with most DVD players? Or is there a short answer to that? I've been to DVD Help http://www.dvdhelp.us/ and I found that supposedly our DVD player can play DVD-RW + and -, and DVD+R - but not DVD-R. But it also says it can't play CD-RWs, but I've been making and playing CD-RWs (VCDs) ever since we got it.

Equally important to me is that my DVDs be playable on our children's DVD players - and I don't even know what models they have. Has anyone had some experience they could share?
