Does Anyone have Magnolia??

(Zone 7a)

Hi, I've tried to root Magnolia cuttings with NO LUCK. Does anyone have any small rooted cuttings or small Trees? I have many plants so hopefully I'll have something you want. Thanks so much!

I might know where one is, I will take a look. If not would you take some seeds?

I can't get those darn seeds to germinate either :-/
And I thought I was the Germination QUEEN...LOL LOL

How do you root magnolia? My old tree sends up tons of shoots but they are right next to the trunk and might not have their own roots.

I got one to root but shortly after it died..I used rooting powder and stuck it in a pot.

Kim, my mom has some woods below her house and it has mag seedlings. They may be too big though, I'll try to remember to look, next time I am there.

Yes, Kim it is raining cats and dogs here but I think I saw some that would be small enough to mail. Understand though, I have never dug up a mag tree but I dont see why I couldnt ! I will email you .

I've read the best way to root magnolia is airlayering

Ashton, IL(Zone 5a)

cc, do you think that would work on the "whips" coming up from the base of my old magnolia tree?
And does anyone else (besides me) find magnolia to have more brittle branches than, say, maple? They are not bendy/pliant, but tend to break off. Woodpeckers love this tree and there are many holes up high on the trunks making me think it's soft wood. Also, this tree has branches that have fused together in spots (this happens over a period of years). Normal??

If I had a tree that had whips and branches I would try both ,but I'd wait till spring......
My neighbor has a magnolia that is being killed off by seedling black walnuts that are now getting huge and crowding it out
I've said for years I was going to get over there and try the layering but the branches that are still alive are soooo far up I can't get at them
