Here it is the beginning of August in the midwest. For the past week or so, all of the hummers around the house are busier than ever.....chasing each other, zipping around, chirping, etc. Why the super-wild behavior all of a sudden?
Why are the little fellows so fiesty right now?
I'm noticing the same thing in my area of Missouri too. I have seen more hummingbirds this year than any other and they are quite bold. In the past I've found them to be evasive but a couple of days ago I had one hovering 3 feet from me, kind of looking me over. I have no explanation for this either...cooler summer temps? Can't explain it but I am enjoying their antics! Some Native American tribes believed the hummingbird signified joy. I think that is true.
Ditto in central CA. We have been feeding these lovelies for about four years and have never seen this kind of activity, including a mating dance in August!!??!! I was in the greenhouse (long and narrow, special hummer exits at both ends) and got buzzed by SIX flying through the greenhouse, all at one time last week. I know we are increasing the population by at least four hummers a year with just Mama and her three nests and who knows where the other females are nesting, but darn, what is going on?
Ditto in Virginia. I've never seen so many zipping around.
A lot of hummers here in the NW lately too.

They've been REALLY aggressive the last week or so around here, forget eating outside!
Glad to know others are experiencing the same wild and wacky behaviors! Sure is fun though!
Same here in southeast Alabama. Whatever is causing them to be this way I love it. I can't get outside without being buzzed and zapped.

Same behavior here, too. Wonder about why it's going on myself....
I am getting these guys in the daytime(not 6:30 A.M.) now. When do they give birth? It's been stay off my turf around here! Two of them went straight up 50ft. in the air and hovered, then one chased the other. I saw one guy in a tree where he sat for 30 mins, waiting. F14 incoming!
Looks like he came in on one wing!
