I have this in the ID forum but am wondering....

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

if anyone here knows what it is. I found it in a *sale* (read really, really cheap) basket...all the other plants in the basket were dead. It has become one of my favs this year.

It's new home...

Where did it come from? With all the exotic things you like to grow, I couldn't even come close on this one.

Hi echoes :)
It came from Canadian Tire...got a $19.00 tub for $3.00. Whatever it is I love it and am really hoping to learn my new friends name.

I do like the non-exotics too...I drool constantly over the daylilies that everyone is posting here. I've just tried too many *hardies* that don't make it through *our* lovely winters that water lilies and tropicals give me more bang for the buck (some may look sad and pest-ridden come spring but they thrive and bloom when the heat comes). :D

p.s. I would love to know what plants others would put in the above planter. I was wondering about something yellow but am wondering what others think.

The only thing I can even come close to is Trachelium caeruleum or other. Doubt that would be 20 bucks. If I can grow daylilies, you should be able to grow the same ones. Maybe I have to send you some of those old yellow ones. Actually, Happy returns, Summer Wine, Barbara Mitchell, Children's Festival are some I've had for quite a while. All the new ones from last year came back and you know what kind of winter we had. Late snowcover, stupid spring and all.

It was everything in the planter/pot that they asked the twenty for.....great discount when all that was salvageable was the pot and the 2 burgandy unknowns. Will have to search that name...I hope you have it because I've only had one other take a stab. We should look at an exchange next spring...I would love a fan or two! :) It may be an old variety but I like it's sunny disposition.

I think you might be right Echoes....I looked at a number on the web and this one looks to be the closest:

What do you think?

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Hard to tell for sure with digitals...my pics make the leaves look somewhat brown but with the naked eye the purple is more pronounced in both the flower and the leaves.

Might not be that exact one, but probably trachelium, eh? Is the shape of the flower head similar, leaves come off the stem in the same fashion? My friend has a trachelium in her garden. I saw it the other day. That's what twigged me toward it. If no one comes up with anything better, I say we have it.

Thanks Roselaine! This one might be it:

It even has the white tips.
Link doesn't work :(

Cut and paste might tho' The write up sounds correct as well...I just wish my copyright wasn't on the pic.
TRACHELIUM Trachelium caeruleum

This dwarf trachelium has been transformed from a traditional tall cutflower into a completely different product for the patio, pot and bedding assortment.

Trachelium was my first guess, too, echoes. I have seen them in various colours. Whatever, very pretty plant--will it come true from seed? A nice bargoon to say the least.

Pam, try and save some seed from it. It will be excellent for trading. hint hint

Good question Sunrize...I saw that the full sized ones would but being that this is a hybrid?!? I will be on the lookout for the seeds...if we have enough time here for them to develop.

Is it a Gigas?

Taramark

Thank you for the suggestion Taramark...I've looked it up and will study it later:

After looking at the pictures I'm positive my plant is a Trachelium. I do like the look of the Gigas tho' and am tempted to try one in a protected area of my yard next year. :)

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

I have had Gigas as well and I love the stature of it but find I'm not willing to give up that space all the time. Eventually I put one out on the street boulevard--which was neat! It would seem, however, that it has seeded itself down a steep bank toward the sea where I can't walk anyway. So, perhaps there will be more in a most appropriate place. I hope so. I love these surprises.

If it is perennial Pam - what zone do you think? Mulch and try in the Jaw???

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Lynn I read some were Mediterranean, Trachelium that is, but will have to check again. The Gigas however I am mighty tempted to give it a try. So did I read right Sunrize... you have Gigas seeds??? ;)

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Oh Oh, nope Lilypon, I haven't collected seeds but it has seeded itself--if it blooms where it is and I can get some seed, I will surely let you know!

:D Thank you!! :D
