I bought ripe figs at a local stand, can I plant the little seeds in them, or do I need to buy plants?

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Hi Just ,please send me you recipe!!
Altho I don't have enough figs this year, first yr for fruit, only a dozen or so,next year should be more.
I was told brown turkey was the variety.

Tropicman, I'll post it over in the canning and freezing forum sometime between now and the weekend. I'll let you know when it is up.

Suz, I can't ever remember hearing anyone here starting figs from seeds, not to say it can't be done..I did a seach on it and info turned up. Seems like it is better to get cuttings. Here was a good site:http://www.crfg.org/pubs/ff/fig.html I can remember mom always doing cuttings of her fig trees.

Tropicman(don't shoot me..lol) here are my trees. They were loaded this year, bumper crop..then the rains came..and came...and came....and..well, you get the picture. Needless to say all my figs split wide open. Popped like a ballon..lol. I barely had enough figs to make jams to sell at the market.

Thanks Lisa. That's a huge tree, but sad that you didn't get to harvest the fruit. Y'all have had a lot of rain haven't you?

yeah*sigh*

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

it's fig season here and I have been gorging myself on them...Lisa, you remember a couple of years ago when I was whining about not being able to eat figs in Washington, and also for the Loauqat? I am eating my fill now of both fruits. Thanks again for the loquats that year. they were yummy, and not a one has tasted as good since those that you sent.

Cala, they are easy to grow in a hot climate, there are so many wild ones here. I wish I could send you a little tree, for all the plants you have sent me in the past.....
We get the brown ones and green ones. Here they say the best time to pick them is at dawn, those taste the best?? so they say...

I bet you are really enjoying all the exotic fruits over there Pebble! I will go beg my neighbor for a cutting, she has some nice trees. I've got a black magic elephant ear that she wants, so I'll just trade!

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

How do you know they're ready?

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Well the color went from green to tan,and they were soft like a pear would get.
Huge tree lisa, but the leaves don't look as big as mine, what vareity is yours?
