Are bananas easy to grow from seed?

Birmingham, AL(Zone 8a)

Or maybe I should say are they HARD to grow from seed? I found an online source for some unusual varieties but I've never done them this way. Any advice?

Here is a pic of a musa enseta that I started from seed. It is still pretty small. I planted three. Two came up and one died for some reason.

I can't get ANY banana seeds to sprout for me..I use bottom heat,I score the seeds, soak in warm water etc etc etc...oh well I got about 30 banana trees now......I'll stick with corms or tissue culture. :-)

Eclipse if you can't do it I don't even want to try! Thanks for the input!

I find them easy to start, first I scar the seed, then I soak them, then I watch them sit in a pot for months, then I toss the soil on the compost pile, then next year they pop up in the yard and I wonder what the heck they are!!!

Root
I thought I was the only one that used that method of gardening!!!!

I should have known you've all ready "been there" "done that"!

You know I was going to post my method but now that I know its not a new one we will just keep it to ourselves.haha

I've started quite a few seeds with that method too!

Me too. Ive also used the soil for other plants and within a week or so up pops a new plant.

Darn it all I figured root and I could publish a book and get rich!!!!!

Guess it won't work afterall!!!!haha

I just posted some photos of morningglories on that thread that I can't identify because of thinking they were dead and throwing all of the pots in a pile to take care of later.

When later came I had stuff growing in about 10 of them. The tags were gone of course, but I have certainly had some wonderful surprises out of those seedlings.

Aknapp, I had a bunch of brug seeds that I thought were no good so I tossed them on the ground. Now I have seedlings everywhere and haven't a clue as to which cross they were. I tossed some dutchman's pipe seeds on the ground and they all came up too, but other seeds I carefully planted didn't come up!

I bought some Snow Banana seeds from Banana Tree and they grew just fine for me. I was suprised how quick they came up. I can't tell you how they did after they were fully grown because I gave them away. I had them until they were about a foot tall.

Brugie, what is a snow banana? Are they white?

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Yep,our secret is out,and chapter 2 of the book will be,starting seeds faster by not tagging them!

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

Maybe you could name that chapter "Toss and Grow" or "Tossed Salad Gardening". heehee

Good thinking Dravencat

Root are you copying all of these posts for our book or did you want me to do that????

Maybe we will have to sell it on Ebay instead of Dave's, these people here just seem to know to much about the subject at hand!!!!!haha

Susie, I went to the site that I bought them from a couple of years ago and they have them listed on the site, but no picture or product right now. Here is the place.
