Need some cactus for a friend!

Birmingham, AL(Zone 8a)

I have a very good friend who has just experienced a recurrence of severe MS symptoms after a 5 year remission. She is very down (understandably!). She has a small collection of desert reptiles and I am helping her set up her 90 gallon aquarium as a desert vivarium for some of them - kind of a pleasant non-strenuous distract-the-mind thing.

Does anyone have any desert plants they could spare that would grow under these conditions (dry sand, indoors, bright hot UVB lights, aquarium about 2 feet tall, 4 feet long) Cactus are very hard to find around here and very expensive to boot, and neither of us knows much about growing them. I will happily pay postage or trade stuff from my TL. She would be so pleased and surprised! Nothing expensive or rare since the lizards actually tend to chew a bit on the three cactus she has. I'm not sure if there are other plants (agave maybe?) that would work too. I am really ignorant about all this!

Thanks!!!!

Wonderful thing your doing. I dont have any cacti but I have some baby airplane plants rooting. They are extremely easy to care for and do well in hanging baskets indoor with just minor window light. Let me know if your interested.

Would the palm that has a bulb for a bottom work?Or maybe a kalanchoe cutting? Would just any cactus work?

DD- We have succulents...will the critters eat that?

The crits will eat the succulents in a minute, Daisy, their fav. food is, darn what are those flat cactus they sell at the grocery? Anyway thanks but I would hate to waste em.

Fivelabs she already has quite a few pot plants - just looking to fill out this desert set up. But its really sweet of you to offer!

Marcia I don't know - I am not a cactus person. I imagine anything deserty with spines would work b/c its going to be REALLY hot in there and dry and the crits will eat anything without spines. One of them needs a basking spot at 110 degrees! Here she is...

Flat cactus-hmmm; will take a look. My sister used to live on a farm with WI style flat cactus; she doesn't have the farm or husband anymore......
