NOT the "cutting" edge in Brugland, but.....

Northern California, CA

for an 8" cutting taken from one of my Charles Grimaldi brugs last November, I'm pleased with this now 5 foot tall baby. Such a showoff!

And 'Frosty Pink' is sending up basal shoots to beat the band and competing with other tropicals for space in this bed.

Beauties Happenstance!!! I love the birdcage!Do you have a bird in it?

Candy:

As always, everything that you grow is beautiful. Your garden is spectacular!

Auburn, WA(Zone 8b)

Wow! I agree. Your plantings are beautiful.

Northern California, CA

Thanks you guys....cool morning here and a nice stroll around the garden (noticing that there is a lot "to do" and I'm feeling guilty cause I've been neglecting it lately!).

No bird in the cage......was a parrot cage that I picked up at a Berkeley salvage yard a few years ago. Had trailing begonias in it last year, but went with some ivy, sweet potato vine and coleus this year.....think I'll go back to begonias again, for the in your face color!

'Frosty Pink' has really grown lately, a little hard to tell from this picture, but this was the same plant in late June:

You can see two of the really green basal shoots to the right of the chartreuse foliage....they are about 5' tall now.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

All I can say is WOW
The brugs love your climate

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

They look wonderful Happenstance, and are obviously very happy there.

Whitewater, WI

Beautiful picture Happenstance. So colorful and healthy looking... :)

Northern California, CA

CC - you are correct about the climate.....I give these babies very little attention and the reward is stratospheric!

Very few of my other named brugs have buds yet, but I'm treating them with the same indifference and they are growing bigger by the day.......waiting for that surprise one morning when a new pretty joins the group. :-)

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

They can't wait I'm sure!
They are just holding back for a major show

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

Gorgeous!!!
I love the yellow/oranges and i think its most definately "cutting edge".
Its all in what you like!!

Beautiful garden, Candy.

Northern California, CA

So glad you are enjoying the pictures of my pretties. :-)

At the end of June I posted a thread about my Mama CG needing a haircut. http://davesgarden.com/t/440511/
This is the plant the cutting was taken from last November.

No pictures since the deed was done. She was so embarassed by the way I cut her back to bare bones that I wasn't allowed to even bring the camera to that part of the yard. Barely a leaf was left, branches were mere stubs. As time has passed, she has forgiven me for the "bad hair month." And here she is after this interlude, showing me that she can overcome even a bad pruning job with a pair of dull pruning tools.

Eclipse - "wish I lived in Calif again"
I do know that feeling. We came to California from the midwest from 68-70. Moved back to Chicago for 9 long years. I kept my subscription to Sunset Magazine all those years and drooled over every issue. We returned in '79 and are still enchanted by this glorious state.

Incredible!
If you want to sell a video or dvd of your yard...

Candy, if you have the time, would you look at the leaves in this thread? http://davesgarden.com/t/447764/
May we ask if you're certain it's CG not DS, and do you know where you got yours?

Thanks for posting, I enjoy every one of your photos!

Northern California, CA

I am certain of very little...... :-)

I've only had Brugs since May of last year, so I am very inexperienced and have to say that many of them still look alike to me. (Yikes! dare I say that?)

Here's the first thread I posted on B&F last year about my "CG" I went to the nursery manager and she looked up the order and said it was Charles Grimaldi. This was not from a high-end nursery. It came from a home center just a shade above Home Depot. :-)
http://davesgarden.com/t/395291/

I've scanned the leaves and labelled them according to "age" and size. The blooms are very large (larger than last year by half again), pale yellow in the early cooler part of the season and late fall/early winter, bolder golden yellow in the heat. I had blooms until around Christmas time last year. It does get very hot here (100+) and very WINDY. The blooms are very fragrant. Both my original "CGs" are planted in the ground and stay in the garden year round.

I'm certainly not knowlegable to give a positive ID, so what's the verdict?

Dr Suess,.... notice the slight angle of the flowers and the very toothed leaves...CG has entire leaves and the flowers hang straight down similar to a versicolor. The flowers are broader on CG too. This is CG from the original plant in a collection in San Diego Calif.

Thank you for your posts, Happenstance and Eclipse. This will help me answer my question about my (perhaps) Charles Grimaldi. I can't remember exactly if my flowers are at an angle or hang straight down - will know in a couple of weeks when I get blooms.

Northern California, CA

OK for you Eclipse!!!!

Now who's gonna go find all the threads and pictures I've posted of my "CG" and change them to Dr. Seuss??!!! LOL
