Passiflora 'Coral Seas' in bud

Floresville, TX(Zone 9a)

Well, before we get the the main subject, the backstory...

Early this afternoon I decided that P. 'Lady Margaret' had overgrown her neighbors P. mixta and Coral Seas way too much, so I started untangling everyone's tendrils, which ended up taking over an hour. After everything was back onto the right trellis, I began repotting Lady Margaret, and when I was done, I noticed this on Coral Seas, which had been hidden by L.M. overgrowth before.

This is the only one, but it's a start, and my first from this plant:-)

Edited for my sad typing lol

even maybe this. Doesn't matter I like them the best because with the heat here I don't get too many.

Well, sadly it appears I'm not gonna get even one, Monterey. The petals on the bud came apart day before yesterday, but it never opened, and today they look kinda shriveled inside (ok, yes, I pried it open just a bit to look, since it's done nothing). It's been close to 100 the last two days though, with a heat index of over 110, so I'm guessing that did not help it.

I did find another bud on it though (along with several aborted ones), so I have a second chance at least, plus if it's trying now, I imagine it will do even better oct/nov when it's finally not so hot.

I'll update the thread if the second bud actually opens... everyone wish me luck and lower temps:-)

I have had 4 flowers since may on mine and 400 on my other passis. Maybe it will turn around the other way when it cools.

Indigoez,

It's funny how your coral seas bud looks a lot like my P. Mollissima bud. I'm wondering if Coral Seas isn't a seedling of P. Mollissima. Maybe not, but my P. Mollissima does not like hot weather either and dropped all its buds which it formed during a gloomy, foggy two-week period in June. I'm hoping that it will try again when the weather cools down in the fall. Here's a picture of a bud that eventually dropped:

Here's a pic of the second bud, followed by a leaf closeup.

Leaf closeup... definitely a resemblance to P. mollissima in both bud & leaves. I think both plants are in subgenus tasconia, and that those tend to be heat haters. Anyone know if 'Coral Seas' is the offspring of P. mollissima?

Hi Indigoez! I think you might be right that they are related. I hope your second bud opens for you.

SUCCESS!!!!

These are from just a few minutes ago...

The sun was too bright, so I had to try different camera settings, hence the contrast differences in the pics.
