Does anyone know the name of this bromeliad??????
Isn't it gorgeous?????
I had it gave one to my sister, and of course, hers is blooming. We were wondering what the name of it is? Does anyone know???
Thanks.
Janet
Name for bromeliad???????
Billbergia pyramidalis. :-)
Wow!! Eclipse you hit it dead on the nose. I just found a picture using that name on google.
Thank you so much.
Janet
I've grown this one before... it blooms good.A friend of mine is a bromeliad collector....guess it rubbed off! LOL
It's a beautiful bloom too! They make lots of babies to share too...it's an easy care, no fuss, no muss kinda brom!
I tried to look up the hardiness, though, no luck.
The lady I got mine from grew hers in the ground, here in 8b. Mine died back very hard, and I only have the babies. The original plant did not come back from the winter. My sister lives in New Orleans, more in zone 9a, about 5 degrees warmer and hers stayed in that planter all winter and she did not protect it. Big difference in mine and hers.
Do either of you know the hardiness zone for this?????
Thanks again.
Janet
Hiya Janet,
I don't know about hardiness zones... but with a little light protection they can be outside with light freezes to about 30 degrees for a short time with no real ill effect.
Your mother plant may have died just because she was older and had put off the babies...
I'm about the same zone as your sis and so your freezes may be a bit colder and last a little longer than ours. We rarely have a hard freeze here for longer than 3 hours and most of my broms stay out doors but are protected from wind and freezing rain..Hope that helps some?

Yes, I think I may move it, I do have a more protected area, that I have several zone 9a plants in and they did very well this winter. It's about the same here, sometimes the freezes below 30 last about 4 hours. Only once to twice a year, though. Last year lowest temp was 28 for about 3 hours. Two years ago, it was 25 for about 4 hours, so you never know. That's very possible about the Mother plant, because each one made about 4 babies, but never bloomed.
Thanks again for the help.
Janet
lets call it "awsome" short for Billbergia pyramidalis

Does the leaves have saw-like edges? I have this one and it bloomed a fortnight ago and was on show for a week. I was trying to put a name to that one. Now I got it.
