Pretty black butterfly

Sioux City, IA(Zone 4b)

Ran in the house to get the camera for this one. I see mostly yellow or orange butterflies in my backyard, so this one caught my eye as being a little unusual. Luckily he waited for me as I tore through the house to find the camera. Ain't he pretty?

What a lovely butterfly!I had a look in my book and found it is called the Red-spotted Purple Basilarchia arthemis, a rather surprising name for a butterfly whose most conspiuous colour is blue!

Thanks for the info. kennedyh. The name might fit better than you think. I wish i had gotten a picture of the underside because it was dark with small orange spots. I find it so strange how the color of a butterfly is different on each side.

The colors are so brilliant when they're still so 'young' .. and haven't been subjected to much of the wilds of nature .. yet.
Their colors fade and their wings become so tattered and torn. I find myself wanting to try to make repairs to them ..
