Congrats on your Hoya compacta mixed basket. No special requirements for overwintering, just avoid frost, use less water when cold but do not let the the soil completely dry out otherwise the roots will die off. Keep it bright without having too much direct sunlight otherwise the leaves may get burned.

Good luck and happy growing,

You are to be admired!!! It is a devil to accomplish...and you will be so glad you did when you realize how much more beautiful your skin is. The weight? Pooh...if you can quit smoking you can do ANYTHING!!!

Nan, this is the way we hook them into collecting.

I have been able to obtain some complete years of the Hoyan Journal , Also a few old complete years of the Fraterna. Is any one interested. I have paid for these so if you want any I will need you to pay for them. I haven't been able to reach Rainbow gardens to rent some Hoya slides. Anyone want to rent me slides. Or I'll put up a deposit and borrow them.

I really love sharing plants with the Newbie,s I wish I could afford to do more. Norma

Prattville, AL(Zone 8a)

Well, I'm Hooked! These plants are way to kool!

I found one at the big blue box today...i know first thing i went to look for, the tag says Hoya Sulawesii / hoya bella I didnt find Sulawesii in PDB onlyfound it under bella , Same plant?
I'll try to get a pic up tomorrow i'm sure that would help.
hope you guys dont mind the 'rookie questions'

Thanks again Norma :-) My new babys are all potted up

I'm a 'rookie' too!

I bought a hoya at HD that was marked Sulawesii and I *think* it's actually H. brevialata....so maybe you could do a search for that one. Anyone else see those?

Celaya, Mexico(Zone 10a)

It most likely should have read Hoya sp. Sulawesi which just indicates that it was originally collected from Sulawesi without ID. Just look at Paul Shirleys website and you'll see over a dozen different sp. Sulawesi Hoyas there.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

AND....one of Paul Shirley'z hoyas named something else actually IS H. sp. Sulawesii!! Forgot which one.

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

Well, see, this HD plant was labeled Hoya sulawesii and beneath that Hoya bella...you know, the EA labels?

I thought I'd read on another forum that the one EA is marketing as sulawesii is actually brevialata?

Anyhow, I'm going to check the PS site if I can find it!

Dixiechick (love the nic-name.... I'm a little miffed they won't play 'Chicks' music around here YET on radio, I like spunky)
Anyhoooo, Welcome to Hoya addiction!
When your hubby gripes about the plants taking over, find the NASA research website showing how houseplants clean the air! Worked for me!

I'd say Nan is probally right about your new Hoya being brevialata.... Exotic Angel has them all over the place here labeled the same way. They have nice plants.... the WORST labeling I've ever seen!
Chris B. bloomed hers last summer and studied the flowers...
It is simular leaf-wise to Hoya incurvula, but the blooms tell all!

Are the leaves on yours roundish, vary in size from about the size of a dime to the size of a quarter and sort of cupped back ward, lightish green with a few whitish-silver flecks here and there?

What part of Alabama is Prattville? I'm a half hour south of Atlanta!

Prattville, AL(Zone 8a)

Lesli, I did a search on brevialata the leaf looks the same to me...and the leaf is as you decribe above..
but I guess that could mean many different things huh?

Nan, the tag on mine said the same thing Hoya sulawesii and beneath that Hoya bella..So I guess we'll have to wait for them to bloom to know for sure? right?

Norma? Any ideas? Gosh!!!! I'm such a 'Rookie'
I tried to get a pic of the leaf but can't get a clear one...dang cheap cam...boo hooo...lol

Ahhh good old EA labels :)

Carol, some tips on taking pictures:
Check your cameras manual for the specification on the closest focusing distance and always try to stay at or over that distance when taking your pictures.
If your camera has a Macro function, activate it if you want to take close up pictures. Again consult your manual for info.

You also can check the DG Camera forums where many useful tips are available.

Thanks, Milan. DH is a picture taker in the family...and being of the male variety of person, it is hard to tell him ANYthing. He will just have to figure it out on his own!!! Soon, I hope!!!
