North Saanich, Canada

This went from nothing to a flower in about 24 hours. Just amazing. I bought the seeds as double yellows, but somehow I don't think so??????

It is a pretty picture.

I didn't figure this was a yellow. I bought the seeds off E-bay and they are labelled as triple yellow datura. I guess that grower was a bit off base!!!! Is there even such a thing as a triple datura??

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

Yes Glenda, there is a triple yellow Datura. I feel like saying, yes Virginia, there really is a Santa Claus.

It'a not the far down the road, the Dat's at Elk Lake were starting to open, when I was there on Wed. and they were definately triple yellow. $7.99 Can't beat that, oh, was that the car door sslamming as you ran out to Elklake???LOL

Its a beautiful picture!! Sorry about it not being a double yellow, but it still is lovely.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Sorry MG99,they had Triple yellow at Family Tree for 2 bucks, you know I had to get the last 2,all the older and untagged plants were 2 bucks, sounds like a deal till you get to check out and your total is 100 bucks,LOL!!

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

You are so right Root, it's hard to get out of a nursery with out spending $100 or more. For $2, I'd be buying the last few they had as well.

ggd, how's your Dat. tonight?

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

I had DW with me,and she was worse then I was,I knew I had to plant them,LOL!

It looks like you are going to have flowers for quite a while. Hey, send Iowa some of your heat. We are actually cold. Tomorrow's high will only be about 67 degrees. Nice pictures, Glenda.

North Saanich, Canada

Thanks Brugie. It was 32 degrees here yesterday(not sure what that is in Fahrenheit!!!!!) I just looked on the internet, and it seems to be much cooler today, only around 21 so far. That kind of temperature I don't mind. We aren't that used to 30 degree weather here, although it seems to be happening more and more every year!
Yes, by the looks of it, this datura will be flowering for quite some time. I am just amazed at the size of some of the bottom leaves. They are huge. I am actually going to try and do a leaf casting of one of them in the next week or so. Hope it turns out.

Glenda

Glenda,
I love Datura and can tell that is a real beauty from leaf to the flower. The species is Datura wrightii and there is a good chance that it will set fruits on its own hand. Many eco-varieties of D. wrightii, though they are self fertile, has to be handpollinated, because the stigma is above the anthers. In your specimen the anthers is above the stigma, so the pollen will drop and land where it is supposed to :) If everythings goes well, you will be harvesting seedpods in October.

Dave's Garden Brugmansia forum is a good place to arrange Datura seed swaps etc. and I can tell you, that Datura seeds from our members are correctly identified and named accordingly.

btw. Did you note, if there are pods after the first flowers? I ask, because I came to think of, that many seed- and flower companies recommend to remove the pods to make it put out more flowers ... that is unfortunately not true. It fblooms equally good anyway. When first the plant has Y'ed it will keep flowering for as long as the heat, daylenght and sunlight intensity is favorable for it and the only thing removing the pods does is to provide you with an unnecessary need to buy another plant or seed packet for the next season :)

Thanks Tonny. This being the first time I have grown a datura, it is always helpful to get advice from those in the know. Do the seedpods grow where the flower drops off?? IF so, I think there is one starting already. Hope so!!! This is a great plant. Just too bad the flowers don't last a bit longer!!

Glenda, there's lots more blooms to come, the plant looks great.

The blooms just keep coming. I love this plant. Tonny, I havent' removed any seed pods and I dont' think has deterred the plant from blooming at all!!!! And the seed pods are defintely forming.

Glenda, you've sure had a lovely time with that Dat. It's sure happy having you as a mom, way to go. I got your other pictures, they are great too. We've got to get together soon.

Linda in Victoria

Thanks Linda. Yes, you and Heather and I must get together for coffee sometime.
I will try and harvest seeds from this plant. You know, I gave Heather some of the same seeds that I bought, that were to be double yellows. Guess what, she has double yellows, I have single white!!!!
Oh well, next year will try for yellows.
Hope you're feeling well.

Glenda
