I need to get a close up so the person asking about them the other day can see how they come out between the leaves. Here is a shot of the big momma plant with pups.
Chinese Yellow showing pups at base
Those are all babies???
Oh my Susie.....that is so pretty!!! Get a close up! LOL I don't have one of those, but I want to see how they pup!
Susie must be nice living where you can leave things outside. :-( 60 more days till time to bring things in here.
Sorry Susie, thats not a pup at the base,it's a cat!
Yes, those are pups. Does anybody want to try some? Y'all just stick them in the garden in the shade and keep them moist, they will make roots.
I've already taken off a big bunch and shared them with neighbors and friends!
I'll try to get a close-up tomorrow. That kitty cat is Simba, the pest! He follows me around and I have to be careful cause he will lie down at my feet and if I don't see him there, he makes me trip. He is an excellent mouser though so he can follow me all he wants. He was bad and tore a hole in our screened porch, DH threatened to have his toenails taken off till the vet said he could never go outside again(cat, not DH). Simba would just die if he couldn't come outside and follow me around, so we bought that cat proof screen and put on the bottom of the porch walls.
Kyle, forgot to say "I love it, if I can ever figure out how to water and fertilize correctly!" Where are you going to put all your plants this year? Do you still have access to a greenhouse?
I will put most of the plants into the basement again..like usual..LOL a few will go to the new growing houses this fall. Not like the Botanical centers houses..but I guess that reality is gone.I only have 800 plants to bring in this fall!!! EEEK!
Only 800???? That sounds like work to me! Maybe where you work will decide they need a new greenhouse!
Cala,
I also have these yellow bananas. I have one and the leaves are turning brown along the edges . I was not sure what was oing on or why they were doing this. Now after reading your info here I wonder if it's too much sun. I have it in full sun. I though since other bananas like full sun, this one must too. I guess I might have to dig it up and find another place for it. What do you think?
Bug Freak. These are grown commercially in open fields with full sun, so I don't think that's the problem.
BT,
I live kind of close to Santa Rosa Sound here in Florida. 2 minutes walking distance from brackish water. Could it be the salt air? It just occured to me that this might be it.
BT, these aren't fruiting bananas, they aren't even musa, they are musella lasiocarpa. The plant usually looses all of it's leaves when it blooms, just a big brownish stalk with bright golden yellow flowers on top that do not hang down, but point up. They usually bloom between three to five years old.
Bugfreak, mine in part sun (the one in the picture) does not have spider mites or any brown leaves except when the wind blows and they rub against the fence. It is a nice plant.
Now the one I have in full hot all day south Texas sun(we are three miles from the bay as the crow flies) are a different story. It is shorter, the leaves are brown along the edges and every spider mite in 500 ft found that plant and set up housekeeping under the leaves! I will TRY to remember to take a picture so you can see the difference between the two plants in different growing conditions.
Cala,
Sorry. I should have been more specific. They are grown commercially for the ornamental horticulture industry in open fields. The Thai nurseries that I visited all had them in open fields, but I think one of the differences you're experiencing , may be due to lack of moisture in TX, compared to FL. The Thai weather patterns, daily rains, heat, and humidity are similar to Florida's. Though we get hot in FL, I think Texas sees even hotter temps
We've been in the low to mid 90's here for over a month. Humidity is high in the morning, but drops to 45-50% as soon as the sun gets up and the sea breeze gets started. Nights are low to mid 70's. The only nursery crops they grow outside(not under shade houses) are palms and other trees.
Eeww!
That looks like mine. I guess I know what I'll be doing this weekend. I know just the place to put it fortunately. It's just so hot here. I guess the nana thinks so too. Poor thing.
Edited;
To say thanks for posting the picture. I finally know what's wrong with mine.
