Living in zone 7, it took forever for my brug to come up this year. I have questions:
1) what size pot is the minimum to be the brug in,
isnt it a hassle to keep them watered
can they overwinter in a non freezing place that is dark (like under the house) sorry no greenhouse- maybe if I win the lottery.
thanks to any helpful advice

brugs in pots...again?????
I think Rootdoctor over-wintered some in a crawl space under his house. I don't know if he used any light on them or not. My first ever brugs were in 5 gallon pots and I was on the water hose detail 4 or 5 times a day. Now I use 20 gallon pots (black plastic nursery pots) and can get by with one watering a day until it gets really hot out and then I do two waterings. However....if you don't pull them from the pot the next spring and trim the roots and fill with new soil, you will be doing a lot of watering even for the big pots. I have several that I'll be keeping over this winter and next spring, I'll have some serious work to do to repot them all.
I wish I could find a local cheap souce for 20 gallon black pots!
Charlotte, you can alway stake cuttings from the flowering region and grow them as house plants on your window sill.
Kell, get in your wagon....empty of course, and drive to Iowa. I can get them for less than $5 at our local nursery. They are heavy and last a long time. The ones I use most have the rolled rim and that makes it so much easier on the hands when you want to move them.
I wonder if it would be worth having you send me some. Is there a cheap way to mail them?
I don't think I could find a box for them. There are places on line that will send them to you. If you want me to look them up, I will. E me.
Brugie....you can get those 20 gallon monster pots in Iowa for $5.00? Wow....I think that is a bargain!
Brinda, TLC got me twenty of them this year for $4.50 each, I think. My local greenhouse sold them for $4.00 or $4.50 last year and I noticed they still have a few of them. I have some yet that I haven't used, so I don't think I need to get anymore yet. You might check with any local nurseries. These are used for potting up trees to sell.
I am going to do that Shirley! A light just popped on in my little blonde head! I have a good friend that works at Lowes! Duh.....I bet she can get her hands on some towards the end of their season! Thanks for turning that 'light' on! LOL
I did PB in the crawl space, she is the one over the chair on my deck.
Was there any light at all there Root??
Charlotte, Brugie gave good advice there. The biggest problem with using a pot that is too small is the plants tend to dry out really fast (and are also prone to tipping over on windy days). If you have a big enough pot brugs do great in containers. One thing I am going to try next year is placing a small pot with holes drilled in the sides inside a larger pot. For instance an ugly 5-gal. pot inside a nice 20-gal. planter. Then the roots can grow out in the summer, and in the fall I can just pull the whole thing out, cut off most of the top growth and roots that grew beyond the inner pot, keep the trimmed plant in the garage and the empty planters under the house. I hope this will save wear-and-tear on my back trying to move those huge planters, plus save some garage space. Do you think this "pot within a pot" method will work?
Root, how do you keep a brug in the crawlspace? Did you just put the plant on its side? Was it wrapped up or covered with anything? I'm not sure how cold it gets under my house - I will experiment this winter with an 'expendable' generic pink brug and see if this will work for me.
Kell, here's a place that sells black plastic nursery pots: http://www.growersupply.com/blowmolcon.html. They don't have 20 gal but they do have other sizes.
I kept allot of my bigs ones in my moms basement in the back part that used to be a cellar. There was no light at all. They did fine. I lost a few of the smaller seedlings, I only had one of my big ones what died back. But it came back from the roots. I just watered them 2 or 3 times during the winter.
Veerrrry interesting . I might be able to use Toms "pot in a pot" method to overwinter the root system. Then you could bring it out in a protected area earlier in the spring and maybe get some growth earlier.
Someone PLEASE put me on your "pitiful beggar" list for a few fall cuttings.
thanks
charlotte
Brugie, all this talk about 20 gal pots got me interested and on the lookout for some. So this weekend when I was at a nursery's closing sale I asked if the guy sold them and pointed in the direction of some big pots, and anyway- long story short he thought I was talking about trees and felt bad for misunderstanding me and ended up giving me a 20 gal pot!
So now my one good sized brug is living in there, and I'm excited to see it really grow!
Charlotte, I can't promise anything, as this is my first year with brugs...but if I have something to cut off of, you can definitely be on the recieving end.
Susanne
Charlotte, there should be many offers of Brug cuttings this fall. You have mail.
