Figs of any type

Byhalia, MS(Zone 8a)

Anyone have any type of figs to trade or SASE? Cuttings, seeds, seedlings - whatever works. I would really like to find a weeping fig start or cuttings, but have always wanted figs and will grow anything I can find.

Thanks.

I can get you a couple rooted plants in Oct/Nov, I think that would be the best time to transplant them.

How do you propagate fig tree's yardbird? My FIL has a huge tree that get's fruits every year.

BrugAddict, I dig sprouts that come up from the base of our trees.

:( He never has any that come up, I don't know why...I've even asked him. Maybe I should go check it out again, or maybe it's a different type of fig? Who knows. But I did make some very tasty jam with them last year.

Thanks

Try air layering. I havent done it myself but would if I had a fig. lol

Thanks fivelabs, I may just have to try that. Great advice. :)

No problem - let me know how it turns out. Ive done it with other trees, just havent tried the figs. If it works, maybe I can trade ya for a start. I think I am going to "collect" figs this year and next. lol No good excuse why I dont have some already growing here in MS.

BrugAddict, take a limb and place on the ground and lay a brick where it touches the ground and it should root. Some will scape the bark on the part that is on the ground and says that will help.

What a neat idea yardbird, I'll try that!! I'll try to get a cutting from my FIL this weekend. Thanks

Byhalia, MS(Zone 8a)

Dont get a cutting brug - what they are speaking of is ground layering as opposed to my suggested air layering. The limb you put the brick on must be close to the ground, connected to the tree and just "bend" down to touch the ground where you want it to root and held down to the ground by the brick.

Wanted to jump in before you cut a limb off. If you need any help with any of those layering practices shoot me an email - I will be happy to explain in further detail.

Whew, well I just logged on and was going to do that LOL...thanks. His tree is so old that the branches are midway up the tree so I won't be able to bend any branches down :(

I'll have to airlayer it if anything. If I can get down there I'll rig one up in the air lol.

It will grow from cuttings also...

Byhalia, MS(Zone 8a)

Emh is right, you can do cuttings but need to "babysit" them a bit. They must stay moist and VERY well drained or you will get rot.

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

I got mine from cuttings. Put them in peroxide water solution and change water often. They were easy and lost none.

Hmmm well now that's an idea too, I'll try that, thanks guys, ya'll are so helpful, I love this place :D

Fivelabs, I've asked my mom to save a couple shoots off of hers for you. I don't know what kind they are but they are very tasty; pink inside and purple outside. They are from Italy. Email me.
