Hi all,
I'm a lurker and love to read your post. I traded for my first rooted brug last summer and it went downhill from there. I soon was searching where to purchase them. I have a small variety but so far all have been lovely and hubby and I can't get over the heavenly smell every evening and night. You all have such beautiful plants and some I will eventually get a chance to purchase.
I have a problem with 3 of my brugs and their names escape me at the moment but I don't know what this could be. I had a problem in the winter fighting spidermites but they aren't a problem now. Any help on what could be causing these leaves to do this.

help for a brug newbie with a problem
Still looks like mites to me Dott.
Same here, mites of some kind.
Mites, sorry.
Mites, mites and more mites!
How did "Sunray" do that I gave you at our June Roundup?
Dott, looks just like some of mine that have what I am calling broadmites. They are such a pain. I never can see anything on them but they will deform the leaves if go unchecked. The only thing I have found that works is Neem Oil. Spray the entire underside of each and every leaf esp the top new growth. They seem to go after that first. I use a hand sprayer and gloved hand and turn every leaf by hand. It really works and usually just 1 treatment works. Good luck!
Let us know how you do!
Mites are a "mitey" big pain in the neck right now.
Good luck, Dott
Looks like mites to me too. Get out the Avid or Neem oil.
so have you sprayed yet I would say mites too , i hav egot to go to wlamart and get some of that sestemic spray TiG and everyone is always talking about
Amanda, what kind is that? I wish we had a reliable systemic granules. I hate spraying, I always get myself all over no matter how careful I am.
Has anyone used Hi-Yield Di-Syston? My nursery man uses it, across the board, for all his plants. So far, I've only used it on a camellia with horrible aphids and, by accident, I spilt a ton on it, but it didn't hurt the plant. It is also recommended for spidermites. Of course, I didn't realize I had spidermites until I read this thread, but I do; however, not all plants have them. Would you treat just the plants with obvious mites or should I treat all the plants??? TIA!!!
SherryLike, I would be careful with the Disyston (disulfoton). It is extremely toxic to people and animals (toxicity category I.) That's why it would be better to use something with fewer side-effects, like Avid. BTW aphids are fairly easy to kill, even insecticidal soap will usually wipe them out. To answer your other question, I would say that if some of your plants have mites you should probably spray nearby plants of that same type too. The mites may be spreading and if you don't get their friends they can move back onto the plants you just treated.
Thanks so much Tom!!! The nursery guy cautioned me too and I wore a mask, gloves and the plant was outside the area of the dogs/cats and I don't think it would hurt the squirrels if they drank it, whew! The camellia was so huge there was no way I could spray it with Avid, but I will use the Avid for the spidermites on the brug and I really hope it works. I appreciate your post!!!!
Gosh, sounds like that camellia must be a real looker when in bloom. I'd love to see a picture of it. I've never grown one here.
Bump
I have a number of them that that have these same symptoms developing over the last week or so. Made it all summer, and now this.
I am concerned because 1. I have to bring them in to winter over this weekend
and 2. I want to send out cuttings of a few brugs
Do I treat them all, even the ones that are fine, with Neem ( that is if I can locate it quickly enough) and will that prevent the spread during dormancy? As for the few I want to take cuttings of for others, do I cut off the damaged growing tips, oh sigh, and cut up the woody branch below, or am I better off not sharing from those plants at this time? Definitely don't want to spread 'em.
I just applied the Bayer 2-in-1 about four weeks ago. Apparently the mites find it very tasty.
I am having a sad brug day, and I feel crummy now.
Doris, this wahhhhhhh is for you, I know you know what I mean.
Wahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
I am not sure if the Bayer will work on broadmites, Jackie. Does anyone know??
Did you use the Bayer one for roses with Di-Syston and fertilizer in it? It has the Di-syston (disulfoton) in it but it is at 1%, I think.
Sherry did you use it as a spray?
These broadmites are so hard to get rid of, Jackie. Do your best before you bring them inside. I would take off all the leaves but the very new ones on the tips. Bag them. I would spray with Neem.
I edited my entry for I just found out registration for Hi-yield systemic insecticide granules was cancelled in February so it is illegal to sell it anymore. Also I just learned that PAN has classified Disulfoton 2% as a PAN Bad Actor, which then makes it either Extremely Toxic or Highly Toxic!! Everyone needs to make up their own mind whether to use it or not.

I had forgotten about this posting I made. I bought Ortho Systemic (formerly Osotox) last year. I stipped every leaf except the very small new ones and sprayed the leaves underside, topside and stems once a week for 6 weeks and it seemed to disappear. I had no problems over the winter but then again I lost most every brug I had to root rot and neglect. I have 2 plants right now with this again. Strange, they are very far away from each other but both are Pink Beauty. I have had other brugs right beside them with leaves touching and they don't seem to contact it.
I have the same issue as you Hellobebe. I am very close to bringing these all in for the winter. I will be taking off all leaves and spraying heavily until they need to come in.
I also have the 2% Di-syston that I bought over a year ago and never opened it since I had gotten rid of the mites with the spraying. I will be adding this also to the soil of my brugs over the next week for extra protection.
Sorry, I should have kept up with this post but it completely skipped me.

I have used Avid with good results, but even it won't take care of them unless you do the spray every few days for three times. If you miss a spot...there you go. These broadmites are horrible to get rid of. A hot water bath for cuttings will take care of them. I believe it is 110 degrees for 10 or 15 minutes. It will kill every kind of mite. Remember to wash your hands good because these things are so minute that we can transfer them on our hands and clothes and never know it. The wind blows them from place to place too. I'm going to use Neem and water in the house this year if I have an outbreak of anything. Mites, white flies, etc.
Thanks Kell, and Dott!
Yes, it is the Bayer Advanced 2-in-1 Systemic Rose and Flower Care granules (that smell like napalm when you breathe it in, lol.) I can't find the container as Dh cleaned out the garage, and it is now missing. I looked up the particulars and states spider mites, thrips and whiteflies as victims. I guess it does work well 'cause I have none of those at the present. Must be a smorgasboard for broadmites, though, because this is the first I've seen them all summer. It's like Jackie's Buffet here, all you can eat.
I stopped by HD to check out what they had tonight in the way of heavy artillery after dinner. (Is my anniversary.) Just what family wanted to do after Chinese. Anyway, nothing. Wiped clean except for Round-Up, although the way I feel right now, was somewhat tempting, lol.
If I call local nurserys and talk Di-Syston, is it likely I'll find it in time? Temps are scheduled to go below 40 Saturday night. Also, I worry about toxicity with my dogs wandering the yard.
I have the same problem, Dott, not all the brugs, only some have this. I want to treat everybody though, to be safe.
Thank you, Shirley!! I was posting at the same time, didn't see yours til now.
I would have to order Avid on-line, wonder do I have time? That must be sprayed outside too, right?
Best bet then might be to cut up the ones who have these and "steam" them, then start again in a bubbler. I have others unaffected , as of yet, so I can try them like I did last year, dormant in their pots.
I have no idea why they arrived all of a sudden, and I hate them and I must murder them (this from a person who doesn't even like to squish spiders in my house.)
Did you have them? Can I overcome them?
Hardest part is to think that I would lose anybody because I don't have that many to begin with.
I know, I can always get more brugs, lol. Wouldn't be the first time. Hey, at least I'm not crying , yet!
Jackie, I have some right now. I'm leaving a lot of them out to freeze. The others are in the garage, only because they have pods on them and when matured, they will go out to freeze also. I've kept cuttings and I'm starting all over this year with them. I've dipped all the cuttings in Avid and will spray them with Neem when I get organized. Avid is very expensive, but since I started using it, I have not had spider mites in the house on the brugs or anything else. Maybe once on a baby elephant ear. Anyway, the Need will smother the adults and the eggs and the Avid won't do anything for the eggs, meaning you have to spray again. If you really want it, write me at home and I'll get the address for you. Oh yes, Avid is supposed to be good for white flies......NOT. I hope the Neem will keep them knocked down if they come into the house on anything without my knowledge.
Shirley, I haven't seen a white fly since Spring and the other day I seen a couple on a little seedling. I sure hope we don't have them like last year.
I'm sure hoping that we won't have them here. Gosh, they were awful last year. I hope you can keep them away too. I'd rather fight spider mites than white flies.
Jackie, I think it takes a while to notice you have broadmites so if I were you I would treat at least the new growth of all your brugs with Neem. I always hit all the brugs in about 10 ft of a broadmite brug. Maybe even further out. They seem to to go to the very new growth first.
I bought my Hi-Yield Di-Syston on eBay, I searched all over for it and could never find it. Bonide has it in it also. I like it because the systemic effect lasts a while. I read online 3 months! I need to go read the label but I am too lazy to go out to my car and get my bottle of it to read the label.
