Touch me not seeds

Decatur, GA(Zone 7a)

I have hot pink and purple (separated). Looking for white and light pink in trade.

Houston, TX

If by "touch me not" you mean the same plant as jewelweed, it does not grow wild here but I really would like to have some. Would you consider selling? OR I have some organic heritage apple seeds, some poke weed seeds, some Elderberry, (I am an herbalist), some vitex, black-eyed susans, and kale, turnip, collard and Queen Anne's lace seeds. Any of that appeal to you?

What exactly do you mean by Touch Me Nots?

We have a wildflower we call Touch Me Nots, but they have orange flowers.

I could find only this in the plant database. Is this what you have and want?

I think this is what's being referred to. Touch me Nots is what I grew up hearing them called too. I never knew Jewel Weed was called that, I learn something new every day here!

Sadie, you're exactly right. Thank you so much for finding the right plant. I've never heard of jewelweed before. You do learn something new everyday.

So, is this plant called balsam? I'm confused. All I know is that I have seeds to trade from this plant in purple and hot pink. Anyone else grow this plant?

Central, KY(Zone 6b)

I don't know what else it's called as far as any other common or official name. From the PDB info, it looks like it can be called either one.
I've never heard it referred to anything but Touch Me Nots, who knows, must be a southern thing, I grew up in MS and TN.
I did a google search for TMN and found several things but most everything was in the "impatiens" genus.
I grew some red and purple a few years ago, I don't think I've ever seen the white, bet its pretty :)

Yes! That is the same plant. It is an impatiens, and supposedly grows wild with an orange-spotted flower, shaped the same as these flowers, and that is what I was looking for. Anybody have some of the wild plant's seeds? The leaves are an antidote to poison ivy. You rub them on the spot where the PI touched you and you will not get an outbreak from the poison ivy. I have never seen these growing wild in Texas, only read about it in books for years. The flowers look like orchids, and thanks for the hyperlink, I never saw them before in colors like that. They are breathtaking!! Gasp!

SO I will email pins2006 about her seeds, too. Thanks, everyone!

The wild flower with the orange tiny flowers may be Impatiens capensis, which I have tried and never been able to grow, even though it is wild in parts of NJ.

The other one is Impatiens balsamina (sp?), the Balsam Impatiens. It grows more erect, with flowers close to the main stem before it branches out somewhat. I have a few dozen this year from seed that was supposed to produce all purple, while many are purple, there are also wonderful pinks and even some salmon. These are VERY rewarding from seed and grow quickly and bloom. I like them in shade.

PinkLotus ........

A treatment for Poison Ivy?!!!!

We've gotta try that. My poor son's legs are a mess right now. We have lots of poison Ivy. I seem to be lucky in that I am not bothered by it ...... knock on wood, but my poor son and husband are not so lucky.

Which part of the plant do you use?

sounds like you have to know you've been touched by the evil plant for it to work though ............. that's not always the case around here. I wonder if you can make a bath with the touch me nots and soak in it????

I rambling..... sorry.

I'll see if I can get a picture of what we call "Touch-Me-Nots" and post it to this thread.

I would never have thought of this as being related to Impatiens ............

Mine is definately Impatiens capensis .... here's a link to the plants database entry for it.

This isn't the best picture, will try to do better at another time. Thre are much better pictures in the database.

The seed pods are just starting to form on my plants.

YUP. That is it. You use the leaves and rub them on right after exposure. Failing that, there are creams and soaps made from jewelweed leaves that are good to apply after you break out. Plus bathing in a warm bath to which colloidal (finely powdered) oatmeal has been added is good. Aveeno brand makes one. I get it at the drugstore. Somehow the oatmeal makes the itch cease and desist. Aveeno makes an oatmeal lotion, too. And no, in case anyone is wondering, you cannot just dump a carton of Quakers oats in the tub. Grind it up in the coffee bean grinder first...

I would love to have some of your seeds, Tree Climber!!

Thanks so much. And I did get some of my seeds posted for trade finally. I will be adding to it.
