Here is what the gingers are doing. It is affecting all kinds except the shell and variegated shell gingers in the ground. The ones I still have in pots haven't died, so I'm thinking it's something in the soil. When I dig them up, it's like the roots are rotting. They are not in constantly wet soil, some are in shade, some in more sun, doesn't seem to matter.
I dug a bunch this morning and the ones that still have green sprouts on, I"m going to plant in a shade bed with amended soil and use a Subdue Maxx drench.
Help Kyle or Lisa with gingers
More gingers that look bad. The edges of the leaf start to brown first, then the whole plant just colapses.
There are some Kahili gingers that still look good. Some of the beds are sandy, some are more clayey, doesn't seem to matter, they are dying in all the beds. Soon I will have no gingers.
ohhh my ! Suz, is this payback for the way I grow brugs?
gingers should be divided if their rhizomes get too big-- they are constantly making new ones and old ones die, leaving a door open for fungus and rot. I'd say by the foliage, it looks like a case of rot maybe?
were they ever in a greenhouse?
Kyle? Chris?
Not ever in a greenhouse. In TN, they were grown in pots and overwintered dormant in the garage. They did have a rough trip south last winter and some froze, which probably left an open door for fungus. I'm thinking I probably should just forget gingers and toss them. I've already lost more than two thirds of my collection. Add to this the echeverias I killed with the Bayer's stuff, and I'm thinking seriously of only growing palms and bananas!
Cala, sorry but I don't have a clue whats up with these.Sounds like a bacterium of some sort.Doesn't sound like the symptoms of a virus.Wish I could help. :-(
Thanks guys(and gals). I am working on digging up what's left. Should I cut the tops off?
I'm digging a new bed in part shade, working in soil conditioner which is like Nature's Helper stuff, and am going to drench them all with Subdue Maxx as I plant.
I guess when I divided them to plant, I should have drenched with a fungicide then, but they were so healthy looking I didn't think of it. It just makes me kind of sad to lose so many things in one growing season.
"I'm thinking seriously of growing only palms and bananas"??? Calalily???
Lilypon, you know I'm just kidding right? I'm just having a hard time getting adjusted to the environment down here. I know I'll be much happier when it comes October and I don't have to bring anything into the greenhouse. Now the greenhouse is being converted to a shade house! I did see two greenhouses today that I would LOVE to have. All thermopane glass, tinted no less, temp controlled, humidity controlled....he grows orchids.
LOL! That sounds more like you!! I was getting worried that my new found source of seeds (not just brugs) was about to dry up!?!?! I didn't really believe it...I couldn't imagine you not growing everything you had before plus a ton more of new and exciting possibilities!!! ;)
I have quit buying new things for a little while. I've GOT to get these beds weeded and the soil ammended. I'm waiting on soil test results to see if it needs any nutrients.
That would certainly get them off to a great start. Have you got the Banana Shrub "Joy" or any of the other ones?
I don't think I know what a banana shrub is. Is it a dwarf banana?
Michelia Figo is one variety:

and Michelia Champaca is another:

I would love to try Michelia Figo! :D
I will have to check a local nursery that carries unusual plants and see if they have one.
Have you tried watering them with H202 (1 T per gallon water) to see if that will help?
Oh good! :D
well that would make since that it does not affect your alpinas like it does the hedy's, if they are new to the soil you have them planted in, it that will happen, they will turn to blahh in no time, hedys can live on river banks and love waters, and they can also go with out for a while. getting to much water should not be a problem and not enoug hwater I have had that happen with H-disney. It looks like your ground temp did not get cold enough or they are newly planted, might be the amount of Fert you put on them..... you might want to ask honeybee or janetos or rylaff on what they think.
Larry
Ely,
I don't have a Clue?? I have been very lucky with mine. Mine
seem to love neglect. Maybe Janet knows.

Here's my two cents, whether right or wrong.
It looks like they have gotten watered irregularly. Too much, then not enough, maybe due to irregular rain patterns.
I had a couple of mine do this. I realized that I was not watering these thoroughly enough when I watered with the hose, then it would rain for 3 days straight and they would get too much. This happened to my Elizabeth. I think it gets used to being dry, then, too much rain caused the rot, although they love the water, they need a happy medium.
I would pull off all the dead stuff, check out the roots, divide if necessary, and hope for the best next year. Water thoroughly foliage and all, and fertilize with a time release(gingers have to have fertilizer), then, see what happens.
Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!
Guilty of the irregular watering. First they told me not to water too much, that we have clay. Well, we are more sandy here because we're 3 miles from the bay. So I started watering more, but the sprinklers weren't getting to the back of the beds where the gingers were. Then I turned the flood irrigation pump on, and they got flooded, then they were too wet. Then they got too dry.....I see a pattern! I will never figure out this new environment!
Today I dug in bags of soil conditioner(like Nature's Helper stuff) and double dug the soil. It's loose at least 18 inches deep now.
I was also guilty of using too much fertilizer because of the brugs that were in the bed with the gingers. I'm making a special ginger bed, part shade, only gingers.
Good luck with your new ginger bed, Suzie. If I have any you want to replace those that died , let me know. I really am not sure what I have, but I think Janet or HoniBee or Ele can tell me what they are. Wish you could have gone with us to the Botanical Garden sale in New Orleans, sure met some swell folks and got some great plants. They are having another one in October, I think. Also one in Alabama.
Isn't the plant sale in NO on Oct. 16th? Sure wish i could have made the last 2. I'm really hoping I'll make it to this one.
Roz, I"m saving my cash(staying away from nurseries, lol) so maybe I'll get to come to the fall sale. I'll have to see how busy we are at work. I'm hoping the gingers will do better where I've got them now. I have about 2/3 of the bed finished.
