I don't have greenhouse... last winter, I put all my plants in the garage but now we have no room for all of it.
I have decided to plant all my brugs in the ground away from house.... called Brug Garden. I lives in warm climiate but in the winter, it didnt go below 20's. Most of time it goes between 40 to 20. In winter time I can wrap with newspaper and lots of good mulch etc.... Do you think should I leave pots with brug and plant them in ground.. (cut few circle around on pots) before plant them in ground. Or remove the pot and plant the plant in. Of course, I will get cutting from each in case if they didn't make it.

Need your help!
Tricia,
For the past few years, all of mine were in the ground. I had no problem with them not coming back. Some are a little slower than others to bud out, but they eventually do.
The big drawback that i have is that i dont start getting big flushes of blooms until the fall, although im not sure if thats due to the fact that they have to start from the ground or if its because of the heat.
This year i put a few choice ones in pots just because i want to be able to bring pot, plant and pod in the house when it does get too cold. I have a heck of a time trying to root a cutting with a pod attached.
hope this helps

Tricia, in your zone, I don't think you will have a problem, I didn't and I'm in 8a. I put two sacks of mulch on them and I didn't cut them back, let the freezes get them and I would like to know if my way is correct, or should I cut them back myself?? I don't know about planting them in pots, but I will try some that way too, this year, for the first time, as well as taking cuttings. I don't mind a cold winter, but I surely hope my brugs will make it and thrive if it does get really cold...
all of mine are in the ground here, i mulch heavy and they all come back with the exception of HG wich i was giving up on any way. even small seedling from last year did well.
Springsong, do you cut yours back? If so, in the fall or spring?
yes i cut back to on foot in fall afterthe first frost here, then mulch real heavy.
Thank you.
Springsong, do you know what might be the advantage of cutting them back, rather than just letting the tops die off and cutting them off after the first frost in the spring. I had tons of what appeared to be 'dead' wood this spring and some fell on to the ground and rooted. Who knew??!! I surely wish I had known because I could have had many for plants...
Boy, I wish I could grow brugs this way. Bringing them in every fall or taking cuttings to hold over gets kind of old.
well i cut mine back and share the cuttings with my friends here and at BGI that are just getting started or don't already have what i have. It would seem to me to be less stressing on the plant if didn't let it get frost burnt, so i cut off after frist frost when they get a little wilty and mulch.
Thanks, springsong, good to know how you handle it and I plan to do the same this year because I was so surprised when the trunks/shoots rooted on the ground. Plus, I have lots of plants to cut back this year, which will make things much easier, assuming at least several grow back next spring. Are the days getting longer where you live. Goodness, they really seem to be getting shorter, quickly, here...
Great thread, I was just thinking about bringing this subject up. Before I "knew" anything about brugs, I cut mine down to the ground, put one of those cheapy wire fences around it and filled it with shredded leaves.
Really I want to find out which ones won't make it. I've been told the Versi's won't come back, but with all the fancy crossings going on, it's hard to tell! Has anyone had a versi come back? Perhaps we could start a new thread about 'what didn't come back' next year. This year, most will stay in the ground with a big cutting of each of my favorites saved in water until early spring.
I have versi alba and veri peach bothe new plants last year they came back but haven't Y'd or bloomed yet. I mulched them really well My HG didn't come back and one of my seedlings didn't come back. I had 10 rooted cuttings that was 20 inches tall that i cut off at the ground and mulched , they came back up for me!!!! they haven't done much yet but they didn't die!! It only got below freezing here about 5 times this winter though.
Vi, I was told last year that my original brug, which winters in the ground, appeared to be a versi peach. Well, this year the plant returned as two plants and they just bloomed and they are now a wonderful pink, maybe there is a versi pink, I don't know. The brug did not have a name on it, so I have no idea what it actually is. It is very tall & wide, 11 feet or so, both ways and has Ys all over it and this flush, it was covered with blossoms, but not nearly as many as I've seen on other, smaller brugs. The first flush there were only a handful of blossoms, but the poor baby had been defoliated by a crop duster and we were just fortunate it didn't kill it. Next year, I'd REALLY enjoy a 'what didn't come back thread' since I will winter all of mine outside, in the ground...
