I love tropicals and in my zone they are kept as houseplants. I had always wanted a plumeria ever since as a kid I saw a picture of a plumeria plant (taken in Hawaii) in a magazine. It actually took me years to even find out what the name of that plant I saw was. Anyhow, I never thought much about trying to obtain one because I thought it was an impossible plant to grow in zone 5, etc. Well, as an adult now with internet access, I've discovered what a great variety of them there are. Its another great plant temptation. Last spring I finally found a cutting at a plant sale that was simply labeled 'Red Plumeria'. I had received two or three other cuttings in trades but this one is the first I succeeded in rooting. Well, I contacted a friend in Hawaii who referred me to a very reputable nursery business. I've now placed my first order for a rooted plant and went crazy ordering other cuttings from other members of a plumeria forum I recently joined. WOW! I've now got 4 pkg. arriving in the mail and gotta keep my fingers crossed that DH doesn't see the mail man dropping them off. He's going to throw a fit! LOL. Well, I'm just so excited and was wondering who else here collects Plumeria? Thanks for letting me share my excitement.
Gemila who's going to be in so much trouble. LOL! ;)

There are a few of us plumie lovers here. What's not to love about these wonderful plants?
Hi Gemila Ü I too just started growing one this year. Here is a link to my learning experiences with this exotic plant: http://davesgarden.com/t/430057/
I use to grow 200 of them in pots in Iowa here. They would go dormant in the basement in winter. Then back outside in summer.Easy plants when in doubt..don't water them.My biggest plant was over 7 feet tall anf 5 feet wide..I gave it away last summer..too heavy to bring in.I left a very heavy large tree out to freeze last year too.again too big to keep.
Hey, thank you all for your encouragement. My first order is from http://www.mauiplumeriagardens.com/ I ordered a large rooted Plumeria 'Carmen' w/ 6 growth tips. Then I met other members of their forum who also happen to sell on ebay from time to time. I've got coming a P. Daisy Wilcox, Dainty Pink, P. Lady in Pink, & P. Florida Dawn fully rooted from Ebay seller ncasselberryfla
I'll post pictures of my new collection when they arrive. I'm so excited!!
Eclipse, are you saying you don't grow them any more? or just don't have the 200 you once had? Such a shame you couldn't find someone nearby to take those trees in. I wouldn't jumped to the chance if I had still been in IA. I lived in Creston in '98-99 & Fort Madison in '99-'02 before moving here.
OH..Gemila...there you GO GIRL!!! Hoyas ARE much more practical but Plummies are so lovely! They don't do well for me at all...too much rain! Will send you some "cuts" in your next box.
Last weekend I was on Oahu with Jennifer and we visited a Plumeria Garden...just huge old flowering trees planted on the dry hillside. The scent was to die for!!!
Have fun... You could find worse addictions!!
Hi Gemila,
I got my first plumie on ebay last fall. It finally rooted and grew leaves, still no blooms. In the meantime, I took clippings from my neighbors pink and yellow trees. I got those rooted with leaves and blooms started and gave them away or traded.
Then I bought 10 clippings from Aloha Palms. I lost 2 rainbows and 1 apricot to mush. So of the 7 remaining, five have rooted and are sending up top growth. The other two are an apricot and a rainbow. They seem to be still hanging in there.
I sure don't know what I'm gonna do with them all, but having fun doing it. And while I am patiently waiting for them I'm obsessing over sedums and succulents.
Isn't it great?
Molly
:^)))
Clare I have no idea on your white one. There are more than 900 named forms of plumerias anymore.A friend of mine in Hawaii has thousands of plants in his collection.I told him about the only double flowered plumeria in Bali..he didn't believe me at first..but brought some back to Hawaii and now its sold in the USA Called Bali Whirl.
Gemila they (about 150) went to a large school greenhouse for gifted children in Kansas City a few years back.
Thanks, Kyle. It looks like I'm going to need a Bali Whirl in my collection! What a lovely gift to give the children in Kansas City. I always say that plants are a gift that keep on giving.
Aloha, if you visit Oahu a friend of mine has many thousands of plumerias in Haleiwa...his son is a world known Champion surfer on the North Shore. The owner is Jim Little, he has hybridized many new colors and kinds.I also got to know Donald Angus..he has a deep pink named after him.Was the garden you visited Koko Head crater park??Richard Criely works..or did work there.
Thats gorgeous!!!
Yes, Eclipse, that was the garden. There were some name tags...some were wrong, some were lost...but it is a haven in a wilderness, right? Bad news is that a new development is being built right below the stables....the time is running out as property is at a premium!
Thats a crime..Progress! Ha! Developers are so Greedy.
Eclipse, I'm so happy to hear you gave them to a good cause. I myself am starting a small collection of plants for my kids school. They go to a private school and they are starting a greenhouse project for the kids to learn about agriculture. I'm hoping to get chosen to volunteer but either way, I am getting cuttings of things started for them to have some interesting plants for them to grow in their greenhouse.
Carol, thank you so much for the cuts. I really appreciate it. I'll be thinking of you more (when I'm tending to them). Any chance you want to adopt a married lady with family?? think about it, you'd have instant grandkids. LOL! If only I could, I'd volunteer to visit you and help you around your greenhouse for free. That trip with Jennifer sounds like a dream.
Aloha don't they call plumeria, pu melia too?
