Epis Help Please

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

I received several Epi leaves in a trade recently and I am just wondering what is the best way to get theseoff to a good start. I have them in a good potting soil mix now, but is there a better way. Some of them had very little stem left on them so they are planted up to and over part of the leaf itself. Help?????

I pot mine in styrofoam cups with holes poked around the bottom in SuperSoil and water them regularly. I have traded quite a few and rarely have a failure. Now I need to get some hanging pots, several are getting quite big.

Hi!
I get most of my cuttings from my large epi when it and my son and the sofa clash. He is always pushing the sofa into the plant and pieces of the leaves break off. Sort of inadvertent pruning, if you will. I let them dry a day or two before potting them up in a lightweight potting soil. Sometimes I have to prop them up if the cutting is too long. I think I am going to do the latest one in a plastic bag full of soil rubber banded to the end because it is too top heavy for the plastic cups that I use as starter pots. It has 4 flower buds that are blooming on it at the moment. This piece broke off when my son and I carried the pot outside for the summer and the screen door slammed on it. Anyway, all of these cuttings have survived very nicely, most to be sold at my garden club's plant sales. Good luck with yours!

Tombstonejan, how funny! I received France C., Inauguration, and Saigon from a friend! I wonder if we have the same friend? LOL! I cut my cuttings up into pieces and stuck them in hanging baskets. They are all growing very well.

Here is what Frances C is supposed to look like:

They have actually grown quite a bit since that last picture, and the one one the far right has been replaced with an epi. Now they are getting so big that they are flopping over the side of the basket and hanging down. They are also getting pretty heavy. I may have to transfer them to a container instead of letting them grow in hanging baskets.

Jan, I don't know if my secret friends are getting their boxes, I have sent out more than one so far. Getting ready to send out another batch this coming week. I like doing it. Norma

I haven't seen any posts regarding your boxes either. Maybe you could go into parking lot and request that those of them that have received the boxes reply just so that you know they have arrived safely or something to that extent???

Here it is a Night Blooming Epiphyllum very fragrant. It blooms in the late spring early summer here. I keep it outdoors , and its a good thing because I have allergies.

Jan,
I was told by a friend who got me started collecting epi's to always let the epi cutting callous ( the cut end) over before planting. This helps avoid rotting, and a better chance of rooting.

Thanks rose318,
Mine are planted now and seem to be doing okay so far. I would like to put them outside but I think that it might be a little late in the season to do that this year. I think I will keep them inside till next spring and see what happens.
