I am trying to find a good book on hoyas. I know its been talked about. But for the life of me I can't find it!!! Isn't that the way it is?? I don't want to spend a lot of money on a lot of books. But don't mind spending more on one good book. Dose anyone know of one???In our garden bookworm there is only one. "Hoyas of Northeastern New Gainea" by Dale Kloppenburg. Is this a good book for someone like me?? I also tried goggle.and they have some, but not sure which is a good one to buy??? Who is a good hoya book expert????
Mary :(?
I know it's been asked, But
Mary...don't rush. Wait until Christine Burton publishes her book...within the year.
Here is a past discussion in regards to that:

Thanks, Do you know about when the book is coming out?
And PanamonCreel, How do you remember all of this? :)
No idea about the book's due date...she is working very hard on it!
And, yes PanamonCreel, how do you do it?
A faint recollection in my grey matter and then the use of the Search function LOL.
I use several books, as resource material. I do use Dale Kloppenburgs series, of two books, which has been good for me, he gives altitude that the plants are found. That is important for me. The pictures are great.
I also use Christines Burtons book, though out of date they have a lot of great material for me. Wonderful hand drawings or tracings.
I use Forester and Liddle
The new Succulent Lexicon has also been usfull, but they discuss all Asclepiadaceae, only 163 Hoya are discussed, but pictures available in the back of the book.
It backs up the other books, which all have mistakes.
Each Jouranl or book has been usefull to me, each in it's own way.
I also have the Succulents 11 The new Illustrated Dictionary, they have some great pictures. Books can be obtained through several Botanical Book Stores, they will have any worthwhile on the subject.
I am a student of Hoya, I don't claim to know which book is better than the other, nor do I want to put one against the other.
There is a book hand published by the author HOYA the SPECIES I KNOW and Love by Christine Burton.
The World of Hoyas A PICTURAL GUIDE by Dale Kloppenburg Note Book Binder.
The Hoya Handbook A guide for the Grower and Collector
by Dale Kloppeburg, with Ann Wayman, who took most of the pictures. This has a hard cover. This is on shiny heavy stock paper. The pictures are big enough to see
He also has disk of his books available now, which is much cheaper.
I do not crtique other people life long work. Am only stating what is available at this time. I'm only a two year student, and certainly don't have the arrogance to do so. Norma
Norma thanks, I was not asking for good or bad just a book or 2 or 3 that some one like me can understand. I myself needs one ( or more) with lots of pictures to go with lots of plants. so i can keep looking back to. that lets you know what each plant(s) need to keep them growing. you know tips on how to take cutting, things like that. But my problem was not even knowing were to start. but you guys have helped out a lot by steering me in the right direction. and Thank-you all for that
Mary :))) I now know more then I did yesterday!!! hehehe
As always...asking questions and verifying data is important. Anyone buying Dale Kloppenburgs books "World of Hoyas" and "Hoya Handbook" should also have a copy of the critiques Christine Burton wrote...one for each book. Actually, the two together make for an incredible wealth of knowledge!!!
This is interesting....now if you *can* find any of those books listed (I checked Amazon for The Hoya Handbook....new copies are out of stock, but *were* $46.00...someone has a *used* copy for $196.44!!! Gimme a break!) where would you find C. Burton's critiques?
Nan, Good Luck!! I have been looking for some time now. With no luck!! And other then D.G. I can't realy find anything on the web. If you do find out, will you let me know???
LOL Amazon always has it listed as out of stock.
The only place you can get a new Hoya Handbook is here:
http://www.rainbowgardensbookshop.com/hoya.html
Very nice people and they do have alot of Epis and some Hoyas but do not do any mailorder anymore :(.
You can get a copy of Christine Burtons' critiques by writing her at TheHoyan@bellsouth.net I believe she charges $10.00 for the disc. incl. postage Priority Mail. WELL worth it. Without the critiques you have no idea what you have.
The Hoya Handbook was the first one I got...but have found the pictures mis identified, and in no order that goes with the copy which is also in terrible order... I did get the World of Hoyas...and have learned a lot by comparing it and the Critiques...but it cost amost 60.00.
I think if you email both of the authors you can get the books from them directly. Beinging a beginner I have no way knowing who is right or wrong. I am always suspicious of those that claim that they are the only ones right. Just my nature. I do have copies of the critiques. I don't believe I have the right to share them however. Norma
I too have a copy of the new book on Asclepiadaceae which someone on this forum referred to, saying it covered 163 species of hoya. Unless I was sent a digest of it (and I'm sure I wasn't) there are only around 30-35 species of hoya in it. Colour reproduction (at least in my copy) is extremely bad too.
