brugs blooming beyond 100ºF

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

i have noticed some brugs are doing just great beyond the 100ºF temperatures.

David sent me cuttings of Dr. D x Whiskers. it is a prolific bloomer amids the super hot temperature. this is the 3rd flush now. unfortunately, i do not know if this has been named yet. am so sorry i do not know who to give credit to this plant cuz i haven't the faintest idea who hybridize it... whoever u are thank you for this hybrid. it is indeed a prolific bloomer, and buds comes in waves... they bloom 2 weeks apart, a least for me i does. only negative factors is it very attractive to bugs... i would assume cucumber beetles, i do not see any cats or spider mites on it.

Golden Lady is beginning to show her bud. this is the one that is planted in the ground, getting sun all day long.

thank U Cala :). i grew this in a pot last year, and did not bloom at all. i planted GL in the sun early part of April. i had applied the AP conconction and 16-16-16 fertilizer on it. it has been a prolific grower. am so happy it is beginning to bloom.

Tequila Sunrise is going strong. this is now the 4th flush i have on it. thank you David :)!

another prolific bloomer in the heat is Dr. Seuss. thank Shoe :). this is now the 2nd flush on this plant.

i had other plants on the ground in straight sun, but am not getting any buds or bloom on them, but they just progressively keep making Y's on them. these brugs are Daybreak, Shirley's Peach, Apricot moonflower, Amarillo Paja, Kell's Girlie Girl, CG s Butterfly, Tiara, Kyle's Giant white, French Vanilla, Cypress White, Gypsy Queen, Pride of Hanover, Milk N Honey. i would assume this might bloom when the temperature get colder?

i could not say maybe till they get taller, that is further from the truth cuz mostly have multiple Y's on each plant. most brugs i grow get the same treatment far as fertilizer is concerned, only difference are the few i purposely did not apply any AP concoction, merely fertilized with 16/16/16. these has not Y'd at all... merely growing tall!

all the above i took the shots at 6 a.m. this morning.

another shot of GL.

Wow look good all of it so nice and Golden Lady must be smell good.

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

i do not know Debbie, soon as it blooms i will let u know if it is fragrant and i will post another picture. from the size of the bud, hopefully it will open sometime next week.

i do not often post on this or any forum cuz the heat has bothered me a lot. am having my routine trip to the ER again of late. so sorry if i am not as communicative as i once used to :(.

it is a pain in the near to be living in an isolated area. there are hardly any hospital around. i had to be travelling 60 miles to get to the hospital. it also sucks, cuz the local paramedics can not take me to the hospital. there are very few hospitals around but they are not covered by my medical insurance.

Sorry to hear you have been sick again, Mavie.

Your brugs are sure looking good. I'm going to have to try something different on mine. Miracle Grow didn't seem to do anything, so I switched to Peters 20-20-20, but that hasn't really done anything either. They have grown very little, and none are blooming, but "Old Faithful". I thought it only had one bloom on it this time, but on further inspection found that it had about 10 blooms on the backside that faces the neighbors behind us. They always get the benefit of the best and most blooms on everything that grows above the fence, vines, etc. Before they built there and it was just an open lot, and I could drive around the block and see hundreds of blooms on my Blue Sky thunbergia, while there would be just a few on the side that we saw from our patio. What a bummer!

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I didn't realize it got so hot there in the summer MaVie. Your plants are doing great though!

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

hi Sylvia... getting old sure sucks, from day to day no one know what will come up.

u should try the AP concoction, cuz that is just about all i use and the 16/16/16 fertilizer. so far, am really amazed to find buds and blooms earlier. the previous years, i had to wait till Fall which was a bummer... they bloom and it is about the time to take them off the ground due to frost bites, and bring them indoors.

at least am so glad i am getting bloom now. i get to enjoy brug bloom much longer.

the main reason why i post this thread is so others may have an idea what brugs works in the sun and heat. i have other brugs too but none are not doing anything at all.

some in the pots are suffering from the heat in the shade, and in the sun . the tip are drying. i mean literally dried, but what is sad some of them had already Y-ed and had buds. nothing could be done, except to cut off the top and the plant seems to revived.

Sorry Cala, we must have been posting the same time. this year's heat is very unbelievable. the thermometer may read 102ºF but real feel is 110ºF.

oh yes it gets very hot here in the summer, sometimes to 115ºF, but in the winter, we get snow and thermometer goes down to 10ºF if not less. yeah i deal with both extremes so are the plants LOL!

Meiyu called sometime ago, she will be coming here towards the end of the month. she is at the moment negotiating for a new house again! she says, her brugs are blooming too.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Glad to hear Meiyu is doing better. I haven't heard from her in ages. I keep meaning to get to SA, but I can't get away right now. I thought I was going to have to go there for classes, but they offered them here.

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

yes, Meiyu is doing much better these days. she is also trying to negotiate to place her mother in a convalescent place. she says she has been trying to call u for sometime now. i will tell her tonight when i call her.

she says she has not done much in her garden. friends of her tells her it is like a tropical garden in Puerto Rico LOL! but she is so happy all her brugs are doing great and are in flushes.

i still have not sent u the plants i promised cuz of the heat and the running back and forth to the hospital. soon as things settle down, u can bet i will send them out. the plants had multipled in size. am sure u will like them. they are so easy to grow. they practically grown on their own and no fertilizer needed to grow them. i will take photo and send them to u later in email.

Hi MVR! Sorry to hear you're having health troubles again, wish someone could move you closer to civilization at least!
Thanks for the update on Meiyu, I had thought she was moving and didn't want to bother her. She didn't get the dream house? (Rats!) Glad you two keep in touch!

I believe I sent you a GQ last fall. My experience with it was it didn't bloom till October the first year, but I got 2 good flushes from her until I put her in my basement, mid November. This year, I planted her in full sun in the ground and she was my first bloomer, and what a bloomer! I agree, she and DS like the heat!

Mavie,your plants look wonderful
You do a great job with them!

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

hi Vi... am slowly working in moving to civilization, hopefully really soon. i tried calling Meiyu, apparently she is out of town and won't be back till sometime next week. she did not get the house she wanted cuz the owner's bank felt the price given to her was way too low. she is now looking into another one. will keep u posted when i hear from her.

thanks CC, am trying so hard with all the elements i had to battle with.

here is GL opening Sat. morning.

Great pics, MVR. My Brugs aren't blooming much is the hot and rainy days.

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

I love GL too MVR, see seems to really like full sun to set her buds, after we last spoke of her, I moved he into light shade and she didn't set many buds at all, back to full sun she goes!

Doc, believe me, it's GQ, my stupid flash went off (again):

MaVie, I am so glad to see that your brugs are blooming. Your are right about your temperature extremes. Sorry to hear that you are still having health problems but I am glad that you can still garden.

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

Thanks Ada, all i have used is the AP Concoction and 16/16/16 fertilizer to aid in the flowering of my plant. since it has been so hot, some leaves are yellowing, i threw in Epsom salts too. so far it works great wonder.

Vi tried to call Meiyu again tonight, she still not home. hopefully, GQ will soon bloom for me. am keeping my fingers cross! do u use the AP concoction? so far my most prolific bloomer, non stop are Tequila Sunrise, Solid Gold, Ember Glow Dr. D x Whiskers and Dr. Suess. go figure why the rest just keep on forming Y's and no blooms yet LOL.

Thanks Frannie. i myself is very please my plant experiment is working. remember how i used to wait till Fall to see blooms ? am totally amazed and surprise to see early blooms at a very minimal expense.

i guess the heat has got to do with my health problems. also last week my dr. gave me a new medication. as usual create havoc on my health. i was rushed again today to ER for more testing. so far no damaged found. late last night i was having severe chest pains, both arms were having numbing sensation and blurry eye sight. it is really is so scarry each time i am taken to ER by the ambulance. well am still in one piece so to speak... i will just take it one day at a time, till i crossed the hurdles of this health trials i have been encountering. am keeping my fingers cross that this will come to a conclusion one day soon.
