HELP!!!! What's happening to my Brug???

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

This Brug was doing just fine! I even had my first bloom on my very first brug (Equador pink). There was a second bud that grew and bloomed, but b/f it could completely open. the flower broke off inside the calix. I blame that on some strong winds we had.

This Brug has 4 main stems. The front two are growing and "Y'' ing, but at this point, i do not see any more buds showing. Maybe I need to give the plant a shot of "Bloom Booster" or something. We have had a very rainy last few weeks and so I have not attended to all my fertilizing as I should. This Brug is growing in a flower bed in full sun in a sunken pot with drilled holed, sunk half way into the ground.

Here's the problem: As I looked at the 2 rear stems, well hidden by the 2 front ones. all of a sudden one day, all the stems and leaves above the original "Y" had just "dropped off"! They were not chewed off, but just separated from the stem and fallen to the ground. A bud that had started forming at this "Y" was also yellow and just came off in my hands.

There are also yellowish spots on many of the leaves with a tiny "something" in the center of these spots. It could be an insect, or something. What can I spray or feed this brug to make all this better????? :o(

I an going to try to post a pocture here of the stem tips. Wish me luck! Thanks for any advice on this.

I have been trying to post the other picture of the leaf with the spots--about 6 times now--but in it's "Preview" process, "This page cannot be Found" always comes up and i cannot finish this download.

I will try later! BTY, the white powdery stuff you see on the plant is some left-over Sevin powder, that's all!

I wish I knew. Try posting that pic again, that may give more cues. I know when I have bad mites the leaves can all fall off like that esp at the growth tip.

Also if I go too heavy on the fertilizer they can fall but you say you haven't been fertilizig. Sorry!

Did you use Bayer Rose Systemic on it? I used that on some plants and the leaves fell off. It also killed about a hundred echeverias that I used it on. At least I think they're dead, all their leaves fell off.

I'm having the leaf spotting problem too. It almost reminds me of when roses get black spot. I think it is very possible that what I have is a fungus and if not, it must have something to do with the horrible heat and humidity. I have three that are affected with it right now.

Susie, didn't you say there was a fungus that they can get that spreads in the air? Seems like we talked about it a year or two ago when I had some in the basement over the winter and you said not to turn on a fan because it would spread it. Daconil took care of it. Could it be the same thing?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Botrytis is airborne and is also spread by splashing water and Daconil will take care of it. The brugs also get fungal leaf spot(I can't remember which pathogen causes that, brain is still asleep this morning). Daconil(active ingredient chlorothalonil) will take care of the fungal leaf spot too. The fungus makes the leaves get little brown or black specks which spread, the leaf yellows and falls. It can defoliate a brug.

i do not have any leaf spots on my plant. i noticed when the temperature goes beyond 100ºF, top leaves of brugs both on ground in direct sun and the ones on the pots in shaded area are all drying up. i do not use any systemic fertilizer either. no signs of bugs or anything. the leaves and top of the plant just dry and drop down. what is sad is the ones on the pots had already Y-ed and has buds forming. the leaves just curl up and totally dry in the late afternoon. wonder if the heat is doing it. it is a complete puzzle cuz not all brugs are doing that.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I have a couple of seedlings that are doing that also, MaVie. First the leaf gets really limp and then it dries up and looks bad and is always near the top.

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

Shirley, this happens i noticed when the temperature get super hot here. it break my heart, but i just cut off the top and the plant begin to grow again.

Gonna try one more time to post the leaf picture. if i do not succeed, I will start a new topic (like the post I just did) and see if it goes better.

NOPE! Same problem. I think the "Preview" process and opening up the picture takes too long, and the page "Expires". OK! Will do the NEW TOPIC now!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Didn't work under the "new topic" either! BUMMER!

Kell: Since I always read how Brugs are such "pigs" about fertilizing, I have been using any, and all, of these as I think of it. NOT overdoing it, mind you
Fish emulsion
Peter's 20-20-20
Espoma's "Flower Tone"
"Bloom Booster"
Kelp meal, sprinkled all around

....I DID spray it with an Ortho garden Insect killer once....

Every time I read a post about what someone else uses, if I have it, I use it. Being completely NEW to Brugs, I am "experimenting"........
CALALILY:
NO!!! I HAVE NOT used any Rose Systemic product!

Bruggie: I DO have 3 rose bushes in the same flower bed, and YES! they are now having some Black-Spot problems! Here, it is just a "routine thing" in the Summer. The spots on my Brug DO, sort of, resemble "Black Spot"--they are just a lot bigger. Maybe the size of a quarter, and sort of "diffused". I am not too great at staying with all the "Spraying Program". :o(

Our weather has not been super hot this summer yet. Like, 80's to low 90's. Lots of rain and humidity, though!

I have another Brug growing on the other side of my house (a Souvelons White), and it does not have any of these problems. It is getting HUGE!!! Now almost 6' tall, "Y"'ing, but NO buds yet! It is in the full morning sun until about 2PM. It has two very strong stems! I treat them both the same.

You used the granules right, Susie? That Bayer rose systemic is lethal if you are heavy handed. I now carefully sprinkle it around the top evenly of the pots on well watered plants. I am careful not to over do it. I have gotten plant burn more than once. I think it is the fertilizer in it. I wish I could find just pain soil systemic for mites.

Here is RK a day after I used it in April.

Edited to say: Actually this is a little while after for I see the growth tips are starting to come out of the burn. It was horrible. I thought I had killed RK!

Kell... that happened to me 2 yrs. ago. the hurtful part, i followed direction on the container. i had several pots that succumb after growing them so nicely. i guess the heat could also be a factor. i could be wrong but that is my theory.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

This is RK today resting after a heavy flower flush. Fully recovered! And coincidentally, I just used Bayer Rose Systemic again on it the other day for mites!

Kell, I followed the package directions and was actually a little skimpy on the granules because I barely had enough to go around. I watered it in right after I used it. Not sure what the problem was.
To those who have black spot on roses( I KNOW this is not a rose forum) here are two easy preventatives:

1)Spray with Neem Oil, follow package directions.

2)Chop tomato leaves(yes, leaves from plain old tomato plants) to make two cups of leaves. Put in blender with a quart of water. Blend well. Let sit in refrigerator overnight. Strain liquid to separate the puree out. Discard pulp. Spray roses with the liquid. Will keep for two weeks in refrigerator. I DO NOT recommend this for brugs, since tomatoes can carry TMV and TSWV, but it is safe to use on roses.

Susie, I do not know what the directions say anymore, but I found I have to water the plant well the day before so it does not gulp up the Bayer. And if I clump it to one side of the pot I usually get into trouble. So I go slow and sprinkle it evenly. I would not use it if I could find a granule systemic for the soil. Brugie has one but I haven't found it around here yet.

Do you think it is the fertilizer in it or the systemic that is soharsh?

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

OK! I resized the photo to the smallest i could. Maybe this will work.

If it does, here, once again, is my attempt to post a pic of of one of the brug leaves with the yellow spots on them.

YEAH!! It worked!!!! Any guesses what the problem is????/

That is the exact same thing I'm dealing with. My leaves don't last very long once it sets in on them.

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

Gitagal, it looks like some sort of fungal infection to me... I have seen that happen to tomatoes but not to my brugs (and I hope I never do). I hope someone here recognizes what's wrong with your plant and can tell you how to treat it.

Kell, if you want a long-acting miticide you might consider Floramite ... it's supposed to be effective for 21 days. Rosemania has it on sale for "only" $215.00/quart. But since it's 1/4 to 1/2 tsp/gal that should last you a while nor would it burn your plants. I haven't used this stuff yet (out of my price range and the few mite problems I do have are easily handled with Kelthane and Avid), but folks who grow roses say it's great. http://rosemania.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/page9.html http://rosemania.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/product142.html
