Can anyone recommend the underground chicken wire cage idea to keep the rabbits and voles away from the spring bulb plantings? I saw some for sale in a catalog somewhere, but it seems to me they would be easy and much cheaper to make--any pointers we should know about (if they are worth the trouble, that is.)? Thanks so much. T.
Chicken wire cages for protecting Bulb plantings?
Here's P. Allen Smith's tips: http://www.pallensmith.com/ftg/ftg203b.html
And an illustrated basket from Garden Gate magazine: http://www.gardengatemagazine.com/basics/g27crit.html
A few sites suggested using purchased plastic "baskets" often sold for aquatic/pond plants (our WalMart carries them pretty cheap) and then covering the top with some mesh...
Terrry--Thanks for the Garden Gate and PAS tips. When I Googled the cages they didn't come up for me. The chicken wire cage concept gives me hope that tulips might be worth a try for spring...Lots of other good information on GG and P. Allen always gives me hope that I can do it (have a pretty garden), too! T.
I just planted the tulips and filled in the dirt to about 2 inches from the surface. Then I laid in some 1" hardware cloth and covered it. The tulips found their way through the holes and bloomed just fine. I do have a bad time with squirells here but this deters them. So does planting baby daffodil bulbs with the tulips.
using the little fruit baskets will also work. You know, those little baskets that you get strawberries or blueberries in.
My sister-in-law told me about that right after I posted; they work fine for her...
I have found the aqua baskets to be a sure way to keep the voles/moles out of the tulip bulbs. Can't say it stopped the squirrel tho. I also bought some nice black plastic covered wire baskets at Dollar General and planted them filled with bulbs.
What about deer netting? It's plastic, would the squirrels be able to chew right through it? I couldn't find chicken wire the other day.......
