My first hummer pics

Paris, TX(Zone 8a)

I just finally got photos of my first hummingbird. These are blurry because the little fella is so fast, but If anyone can identify what kind he is, I'd be grateful.

jdee .. Proud for you! Know you were delighted!!

Looks to be a Ruby Throated. Not sure about the sex in the first 2 pics - but that last one; is definitely a female Ruby Throated!! Keep 'em comin' !!!

Is this a digital camera you're using? .. If so (and depending on the make and model) .. If you haven't already - check to see if you have a 'motion' setting on your digital. If so .. that will help you in 'stoppin' that hummer in his/her tracks! (wellll, for a decent photo shoot anyway!!) .. hee

Gonna keep my eyes peeled .. for more pics soon!

Jdee the problem you are having is two or three things. Your auto-focus is not reading the feeder, it's blurry and it's not moving. If the feeder is in focus on your camera the hummer would be too.Does your camera have a sound it makes when the auto-focus has locked? if it does make sure it is on. I have this same problem all the time. It isn't you or the camera but a combination of little things. If you enable your flash it will light up the guy. I get that backlight all the time and it makes the guys turn almost black. The flash lightens the area. The idea about the speed setting is good if you are not steady on the camera at low light the shutter gets slower and you see more movement in the shot. That is not the problem you are having it's focus and the hummer being backlite. The auto-focus has issues with small objects in low or bright light. If you can't get the camera to focus on the feeder, focus on something next to it . Hold down the button to keep the focus locked pan up to the feeder and shoot. Sounds hard but with practice it's easier.

You can get almost stop shots with a flash and good auto-focus. This is with flash and 1/60 of a sec at f3.5. I knew I couldn't catch him but he had just been to that flower. I focused held down the button and waited. Bang! I have his picture! It's like driving the more you do it the easier it is. Good Shooting!
