Help with new philodendrons

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6a)

I have recently started a small collection of philodendrons. They are all in pots (I'm zone 6) on my patio for the summer. The problem is I don't know if they are suffering from new environment shock or if there is a more serious problem. I'm loosing a lot of leaves, many are rotting, and some are turning yellowing and dying (depending on variety). They are under a tree in dappled shade with a little afternoon sun. I have not watered them, though we’ve had one really soaking rain and the soil has stayed fairly moist. I've put most of them in clay pots to control the moisture.

The ones that seem to be rotting are the self heading types; Xanadu, Prince of Orange, etc. The ones that are yellowing are the vining types; Royal Queen and Hastatum

Please help, I love these plants and don't want to loose my fledgling collection! Any suggestions would be very welcome!

Wish I could help you. I'm not good with Philodendrons. I have one...in a north windown inside, and it is alive. That is all I can say for it. I believe the name is Pink Princess and it is growing very slowly. I let it dry before watering. Hope you find someone who can help you. I'll be monitoring this thread in hopes I can learn something about growing them. I always thought they were carefree plants.............NOT. LOL!

I know what you mean - they are such beautiful plants! I just know once we get the hang of them, we'll be thrilled with the results! (next, I tackle rhizomatous begonias! :))

Begonias are another one I have trouble with. I either over water them and they rot or the wind gets them. The bedding type generally mildew for me. I gave up on them several years ago. I guess I've had some of the Non-Stop begonias in the last 5 years that have done okay, but it's been a while.

Hi this might help a little, yellow leaves ond rotting leaves sounds like to much water.I have a dozen or so philodendrons and they are in a50-50 mix of potting soil and peat, only watered when the top inch or so of soil is dry also they get no direct sunlight at all.

I had a a philo that looked great when I bought, but as soon as I started caring for it, it started to decline. (go figure) sooo I tried to love it back to life and it got worse. So I gave up, but didnt have the heart to throw it, so I put it in an area behind my couch that I rarely look in and I looked at it this week after about 2 months of neglect it looks great! I just watered it about once every week or 2 and let it fend for itself...so maybe you're loving it too much :)

UGH, I'm sure you are both right, brucedean and art_n_garden. I am always fighting the urge to do "something" with them! :) Perhaps if I get them out of any direct light and access to water and rain, they will fend better.

Thank you for your suggestions!
