I bought one this spring and have hopes of seeing at least one bloom. Yes, it is pretty. Love the color.

New Madison, OH(Zone 5a)

Wow pretty, Kathy Ann. The one I grew some years back..have very small blooms on it..like the size of my thumb!
I wonder if there are different varieties?

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

yes, I think there are diff varieties of this,

Ok thanks! I guess I just never thought there was...what do I know...lol!

Milo, IA(Zone 5a)

Wow, that is a knockout.

Kathy_ann,
Do you know the name/ID of the one you have? I have this same one and still haven't been able to figure out it's name. Maybe I can link this to the ID section of DG. That is, unless you already know its botanical name.

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

in all honesty, the name got lost. I dont know for sure which one it is, sorry I couldn't helpmore.

It looks like Aristolochia Gigantea. I got one from Logee's this year and after seeing your picture, I went to look at mine and see little buds forming. Can't wait.

Navarre (NW FL), FL(Zone 8b)

Brugie,
Maybe you can post a picture of your when it blooms so that we can compare? It would be awesome. Good luck with your Brugie. I hope to see it bloom for you.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I sure will. I have no idea how long it takes from bud to bloom, but I know that I'm so anxious it will feel like years. LOL!

How long do the blooms last?

Yes that is gigantea. I hope you have lots of growing room.

oh my gosh, LOL it's in a pot with a tomato cage over it. LOL it ws really tiny when I got it. I plan on letting it take over the greenhouse this winter though. it can hang up in the rafters for all I care. LOL I'll never know how to collect the seeds without a step ladder though. That's beautiful rylaff, wish I lived in florida again.

Oh dear, I may be in trouble too. Guess I better make some changes before it gets too big. Beautiful plant rylaff.

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

yep me too,

I think I've made a wee little mistake with my gigantea. It is not mild mannered like Elegans. It has romped across a 10 ft tall Jessie Noel brug, up and down my fence and is headed for the neighbor's.

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

GOSH YOU GUYS ARE SCARING ME TO DEATH, I'M NOT SO SURE I'M PREPARED FOR THIS LOL

I know. I started mine off growing around an old tree trunk. The I added twine for it to crawl up to. Then I added netting against the house. Of course, that is here in zone 8b where it did not die back all the way over winter.

Okay you guys, I'm a sucker for vines. Does anyone have any seeds for these great climbers. I would love to trade for some.

I tried the seeds and had no luck.

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

Seeds must be very fresh.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

How are these started then? Are they started from cuttings or bulbs. Never had this one before.
Jan

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

I have started them from seed but they are a little difficult. I have also started them from cuttings. A little slow to start off but once they take hold, watch out.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I did something with seeds that I never thought would work. I put them in a little bowl of water to soak, then forgot them. I found them a couple of weeks later, almost dried up. I added water and soaked overnight, then just dug a trench in the garden and tossed them in, sort of in a row, not expecting any to come up. I covered with a little garden soil and watered them in and when I watered the flowerbed they got water.
Now I have a little one foot row with about 50 teeny dutchman's pipevines growing in the garden.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Cool. What kind do you have Cala? I just check my Gigantea, and it has several buds on it and one isn't far from opening. Can't wait to finally see blooms.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Brugie, the babies are Elegans. Gigantea is the one taking over the fence, lol.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I heard they stink bad. I sure hope not. The bloom is so unusual, especially for me here in Iowa. Having something tropical is so much fun. Wish the summers were longer.

Kirbyville, TX(Zone 8b)

Jan I have seeds from my vine, I harvested them this year...I started mine from seed~ The plant doesn't stink, the seed pods smell like pipe tobacco.....Debra~

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Thanks for that information. Sounds like I might really like this plant if it doesn't smell like rotten meat. LOL!

Navarre (NW FL), FL(Zone 8b)

I don't know if anyone else here has noticed but when the bloom is recently opened/bloomed, to me it seems to give off a lemon grass scent. Maybe my mind is playing tricks on me.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Bugfreak, yes, A. gigantea smells lemony, can't remember any smell from A. elegans. The only one that stinks is A. grandiflora Brazilensis. It smells like rotten meat.

Navarre (NW FL), FL(Zone 8b)

Cala,
I have been telling people all along that it does have it's own scent/fragrance but no one seemed to believe me. This fragrance only lasts a few hours at the most from the time it opens up. I've heard of the others smelling like rotting meat but I've never smelled them. I don't have them in my collection yet.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I have been tempted to order the smelly one, but figured the giant voodoo lily in the front flowerbed would be all the neighbors could handle, lol. It might be a bad sign if buzzards were seen constantly hovering over my flowerbeds!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Gosh, I'm glad to hear mine won't smell bad. The buds are growing so fast. Hope I don't miss its opening so I can smell it.
