Sure is pretty Sue and it looks like some seed pods are forming for you. I love growing cannas from seed. Usually, I give them all away though.

I hope to do a ton from seed next year,I like this one, does it hold this pattern throughout?Looks like a little yellow tongue sticking out!LOL!

Yes the color is vivid and has been blooming since the last week of June. I hope to get lots of seeds and I will save some for both of you if you would like to try these.

Cute and dainty flowers for a canna - and about 18" tall. It looks great next to a water feature. Here is another view of the pods.

I have this same canna also. It was sent to me by a trader in Brazil. He called it Canna limbata. It forms seeds very easily. It stays small in a container but grows much taller when planted in the ground.

This one is so bright. I love it. Great pictures Sue and Clare.

How do you plant canna seeds & how long will it take that little seed to grow into a blooming size plant? Thanks for any help.

Christmas - All I did was soak them for 48 hours in water in February. I grew them on in my greenhouse (your kitchen window would should be sufficient if you don't have a GH) and then in April I planted them out and they grew like gangbusters.

Thank you,Sue!!

Sue, thank you, thank you. I got the seeds today. Can't wait for late winter so I can plant them.

Do Canna's hold true to seed? Thanks

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Hi Christmascactus, the canna limbata came up really quickly for me and bloomed in the same year.

Fivelabs, from what I understand, they do not come true to the parent plant, but the Canna limbata seems to come true or pretty close.

Clare & Sue both your cannas are so pretty.
I'm going to have to try growing some from seeds.

Sue, I would love to try seeds too, I am just getting into tropicals and am mostly a lurker here trying to learn as much as I can reading the posts and some recent books I bought. Just ordered from the canna co-op too, they are new to me as well!

I never tried Canna's from seed. I figured I wouldnt get anything good, reading all this makes me want to give it a try. Anyone have any I could get for SASE or trade? I have can collect fresh Moonflower or Balloonflower seeds to trade. The Moonie I have is the shrub, not the vine - huge white night blooms. Let me know.

Hi,

I'm new here and I have a question about my cannas. I see a pod on them, looks like a little fuzzy thing. If I want to try them from seed, do I just plant the whole pod? Or do I break it open? They are still on the plant, do I wait for them to fall? or just pluck them off?

Thanks,
Kathy

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Kathy, the pod will dry, and you can harvest it then. The black seeds are inside. Sometimes cannas have empty pods which are small. The plump, fat ones indicate that there are seeds inside.
