My Hoya odorata, which I bought from Logee's last year, is very yellow. I tried giving it Iron Chelate and misting it with Superthrive, but it just wants to be yellow. I just repotted it to a hanging basket and put it in a more shady aspect. Any ideas? Thanks!
Yellow Hoya
Had the same problem with my H. cembra (aka odorata) last year and lost it. On mine the root system most likely dried out in transport and I only noticed it too late when the leaves yellowed and fell off.
You may have to take cuttings and try to re-root them if thats the case with yours.
Also too much direct sun light or cold drafts can cause yellowing of leaves.
Thanks so much, PanamonCreel. I think this was getting too much sun. I'll watch it closely and make sure that it doesn't dry out. Also, thanks for providing the name "H. cembra." I was wondering why I couldn't find hardly any information about "H. odorata." There is probably more information available for "H. cembra."
Could the yellowing of the leaves be also a fertilizing problem? Could it be a inconsistant wateing program? What about too cold or hot, and what about uneven temps? I found a sentence that says "Nitgogen deficiency causes leaves to turn a sickly yellow green and and drop in huge numbers."
I need to find out what causes this as well. Norma
Hi Norma, I think it was just getting too much sun at its previous location. I've moved it to a more shady location. I checked the roots when I repotted it last, and they were healthy. It is in a hanging basket so drainage is excellent. The leaves are not dropping at this point. I don't think it is any of those things you mentioned. Temperatures are fairly warm and consistent where I am, and my watering is regular. Once the leaves turn yellow, I don't think there is much one can do to change them back to dark green again. Only the new growth will be green if the problem has been corrected. Sometimes chlorosis is a problem with tropical plants, and I use Iron chelate for that. I fertilize regularly, and I use Superthrive also. Iron Chelate hasn't helped with this one, but no new growth has come in so time will tell. Do you have the same problem with your Hoya?
